Hi there,

so heres the story.

I own a 2002 1.2 fiat stilo active 3 door with a 5 speed gearbox due to teh previous seller being cheap. The car im finding out now was a serious pos cause of teh messing the previous owner did and he has no left the country.

There is a fiat stilo 1.6 2001 3 door for sale for 500 but the gearbox is gone/

Is it possible to take the 5 speed out of my old 1.2 stiloa nd out it into the other stilo and have a nice perfect 1.6 for 500 euro?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

the 1.6 stilo uses the 514R gearbox which is the reinforced version of the 514 gearbox of the 1.2 Stilo.(R stands for Reinforced)
So even if the gearbox will fit perfectly it will be less strong than the original one and give you troubles sooner or later.

thanks for the info, the gear box in my stilo is a 5 speed though and not a 6 speed though, how can i check the make of the gearbox in my car? see if it would do?

thanks again

dont bother mate it wont fit i know ive done it.
when my first box failed on my old 1.6 i got sent two boxes both it transpired were from 1.2 engines, the bell housing is smaller on the 1.2 and the starter motor is in a different place.
i suppose you could change the flywheel but then the bell housing bolts wont line up.
i bought a gearbox only a few months back for my wifes 1.6 and it cost me £300 from fleabay.
the gearboxes on the 1.6 are terrible, ive had two go bang, if you do decide to get this car and rebuild it, when you get a second had box change the diff pin, with the box of the car its only a 20 min job and you will be thanking me at a latter date.

well, there have been few reports to my knowledge of exploading gearboxes on the 1.4. so with that in mind i would avoid purchasing one, the only box that will fit without any problems is the 1.6 box, they do come up quiet often on ebay so keep your eyes peeled. BUT, if you get one make sure you replace the diff pin as it WILL fail eventually.

whats gone on the old box? is it just simply not there or has it had the diff expload like most go.
it maybe worth your while removing the box and seeing what the damage it, my first one that failed only needed an new diff pin and outer casing, it cost me around £300 in total if memory serves.
the second one that failed only a few months back on the wifes car was a total loss with extreme damage to the gearbox as well - the difference was she was motoring when it happened and when my car went i was only pulling away.
the gearboxes them selves are actually pretty good, it just the diffs that really let the whole car down.
