Re: (Drunk?) Neighbour wrote off my parked VW - need a new car.....need Stilo 1.2 advice!
Interesting. Firstly, it appears from reading new-FIAT-owner experiences that you will have less likelihood of problems if you buy a car that is not new. And, as a bonus, you'll be able to afford it without the finance? Otherwise aren't you losing pretty much your whole £3000 in depreciation? Oh, I see that Dave said pretty much the same thing.
The Top Gear survey is of people that bought their cars new? It would be interesting to have an otherwise-identical survey of second owners!
Secondly, engine size does make a difference. If I get out of my 1992 Alfa 164 and drive a 2004 Toyota Corolla, yes it is a lot slower. Funny that, considering it's a 3-litre V6 against a 1.8L four cylinder that feels like a 1.5 - no contest.
If you really like the Stilo, why don't you look at getting a Stilo Abarth that's a couple of years old? Surely that will be a much nicer car than a 1.2 Stilo would be. A 1.2 Stilo (65bhp?) must be at least as gutless as a 1.0 Uno (45bhp)...
As for the Tipo you mention, I bought a 1989 Tipo DGT in 2001, and sold it within a few months. Nothing had gone wrong with it, so nothing for me to improve on, and the 1.6L engine didn't impress me (felt like a 1.3 really). I had mainly bought it for the not-rusting body, but the boredom of total reliability with lacklustre performance was not what I had expected, especially for that much money!
Three years later I spent twice as much on a 1988 X1/9... I've only driven it a few thousand kilometres!
I always go for value with cars - what actual motoring do you get out of it compared with what it costs - and new cars are a hopeless bet in this respect (unless, possibly, you keep them for about 15 years and clock up a huge mileage, in which case - how boring!)
