Hi, I've got a 1.6 stilo 02 had the head gasket replaced recently, but now the engine won't rev above 2k anyone got any ideas what could be causing this and what I can do, I like to have a go at fixing it myself before I have to take it to my Fiat dealer.

I did jump start it after it initially broke down,8.0am Monday 4th Jan 0.4c but the throttle was working ok after that, however it started to overheat (head gasket) so I stopped and called the RAC who towed me home. I also though it might be the throttle body so I bought a second hand one from a salvage co, that made no difference. Frying the ECU sounds expensive.

thank you, these prices are a lot less painful than Fiat's, I was going to drive/limp to my local Fiat dealer this morning but now it won't start, I think the battery is a bit low.

Since this thread, I've had a new ECU fitted, this has solved the revving problem Hooray!!... But now the engine cuts out when the revs drop to approx 10k. Which is basically every time I take my foot of the accelerator. The garage have said they have done everything they can , there are no fault codes showing so I'm $1,500 out of pocket with a car I can't use. I've tried cleaning the Throttle Body with Carb Cleaner, having read treads on this site however, this hasn't helped, but I've only tried to clean it while still on the car, should take the Throttle Body off the car to clean it, if so is it just a case of removing the four bolt and the electrical connection.

there is also a registration procedure for the new ecu.. but given that you didn’t mention anything about the eng. man. light being on i would assume that either yourself or the garage have done it..

The dude above (hm one can use THE when one is referring to an institution? :ROFLMAO:) is spot on (y) Throttle clean and relearn is all you'll need (probably ) there is a guide on how to clear the throttle body in the guides section ;)

Thanks for your input so far, the ECU was fitted by a Fiat Specialist so I assume they followed this procedure, having said that they returned the car to me without a clip on the T/b hose or the smaller hose that come off it. I have tried the relearn process but without disconnecting the battery first, so I'll give that a try. Is it necessary to remove the Throttle Body to clean it?

no just the air pipes.. go to the stilo guides section dude! the guide is step-by-step.. and you asking this question tells me you did not look at it!

I have read the section in the Stilo Guides, and I've cleaned the Trottle Body with Carb Cleaner as described. The reason for my question was because it hasn't made any difference so I thought perhaps I needed to remove the T/B to get to the other side of the butterfly flap.

you open the flap (it moves) and clean ;) be warned though.. it is a sensitive mechanism and could be damaged (though i've done it 5 times now without ill effects) use an old toothbrush to get into the pivot points above and below.. especially below (after cleaning you need to retrain the position sensor) it helps to have long fingers for this (or, if like me you like it dangerous, open the flap and jam it open with a screwdriver handle.. be sure not to lose your screwdriver down the intake manifold :ROFLMAO:)

I've now cleaned the throttle body 4 times and gone through the re-train process including disconnecting the battery for an hour, still cutting out at low revs. If it makes a difference the problem get worse as the engine warms up.

PS Anyone want to buy an stilo 1.6 with slight idling problem?

Just a though, when my car came back from the "Fiat specialist" there wasn't a clip on the large hose to the Throttle Body I've use a cable tie pulled tightly with a pliers because I couldn't get a clip big enough, do you think this could be the problem even though the cable tie is very tight.

According to the Fiat specialist there are no error codes which is partly why they were stumped, It's not showing any engine faults on the dash, nor is the engine warning light on.

Difficult.. i assume it idles ok after starting? And only stalls after you drive and let go of the accelerator? If that is the case – then i cannot think of anything else that would cause these symptoms without generating an error code. You can try cleaning your maf and map sensors with contact cleaner (also treat the connections/plugs in the same way). Anything else would log an error code - perhaps the garage were not entirely forthcoming? Why don’t you borrow or buy a generic OBD2 reader? These things are cheap as chips and work off a laptop.. Besides even if you sell this car an obd reader would be useful as it would work with a replacement vehicle too.

In other words, IF there are no error codes and IF you have cleaned the throttle flap properly (including the area above and below the flap) and IF you performed the re-learn procedure: then i can advise you no further. However, if any of the above have not been done correctly or you are unsure about something – do let me know (i.e. how did you clean the area under the flap? Just spraying it won’t help.. take pictures?); i have experienced you symptoms and 2 min later (using carb cleaner and contact cleaner on the sensor) i was off with no problems. Beyond that.. you can take it to a fiat authorised place as the next step (they would be able to monitor sensor readings and outputs for consistency and advise you from there). You need a proper clip but i don’t see how that would cause you problems (you’ve not got a turbo.. so there will be no pressure loss)

Hi Dr12 thank you for your help, The idle when I first start the car cold is ok as the engine get closer to normal temp, the throttle starts hunting and the gauge fluctuates between 10,000 and 0 until after about 5 mins it cuts out. It will start again ok but won't tick over so if you take your foot of the pedal the engine dies, It's also very difficult to hold the revs steady under 10,000rpm.

I've cleaned the Throttle Body with Wynn's Fuel Injection Intake and Carb Cleaner, I've sprayed the cleaner into the T/B and then opening the flap slightly I've wiped the area with a clean cotton cloth. If there was an error code present wouldn't the engine warning light come on.
