Hey there everyone. Looking for the stilo boffins to help me.

Basically a girl in my work had a headlight problem with her stilo and wasnt wanting to fix it, so decided to trade it in.

58k, 1.6 5d active, 52 plate, blueish colour with the big sunroof, no alloys, good overall condition apart from petrol cap cover missing.

What is this worth? I'm basically trying to buy it off her instead of her trading it in.

The sunroof is knackered and doesnt work, but she thinks its the motor as its never leaked. Is this common? And how difficult to fix?

Anything else i should be aware of? Took it for a quick spin round the works carpark and feels a tad boaty... is this normal? Not overly so, just noticable.

What you guys think i should offer and how much to repair the parts?

Ross

p.s. suspension recall done on monday, so everything checked over while in fiat and no problems. Headlights are now working as was incorrect bulbs. Also, i could have swore the throttle stuck at 2k when i was changing gear, is this common or is it more likely that my foot was still on the accelerator? :D

And a hell of a lot of faults if your unlucky..:(

What kinda things should i look out for? I can take it for another spin in around an hour, so anything i should check?

Ross

At that price does it matter :chin:

Clutch sounds suspect. Take up to 60mph in top and then floor the accelerator.

Check a reset doesn't fix the sky-roof (use Search if you don't know what this means) - but suggest you don't try this whilst the owner is present or the price might go up suddenly ;)

Ignore PNL - he's just a big sick because he used to own one but then more or less gave it away :(

Thanks mate!!

Just got some more info. Cambelt done in march 08, along with the exhaust. Brake discs and pads done aswell! :D

The reset of the sunroof? Interesting. I'm not gonna tamper with that until spring time.

Searched but cant find any exact procedure? Someone find the reset for the skyroof for me please?

Ross

Reset it by turning the knob to (0) and keeping it pressed in until its finished what ever it does

£600 sounds a bloody good price. The girls a nutter for selling it for so little considering the recent work that's been done, but thats all good news for you!

As for potential problems, suspension springs can snap, but that's why it's had the recall work done (to fit a piece of metal to prevent the broken spring going into the tyre).

Coils can fail, but theyre dead simple to change & it's certainly not a unique Stilo fault, coils go on loads of cars.

The only other thing that springs to mind is the false warnings that can sometimes appear when you start the car. Things like 'abs failure' or 'engine failure'. The Stilo is very sensitive to battery voltage changes & if the voltage becomes too low (tired battery, car not taken for a good run once in a while to charge battery) then it can struggle to complete it's pre-start-up checks on the various systems & then send out these warnings. Just see if it happens repeatedly & if i doesn't, don't worry about it. Someone on here (cant remember who) has a really good saying 'if it's broke, turn it off & back on again' - if a warning appears repeatedly then you may have a problem, otherwise, take the car for a run or buy a new (high quality) battery. Usually far cheaper than getting all manner of diagnostic work done on an engine failure which isnt there, for example!

Can't think of any other common faults on the Stilo. Theyre generally very under rated & in reality are no worse for driveability or reliability than many models that sold in much higher numbers, like the Renault Megane & Peugeot 307. Hope that helps a little!

..

A second hand stilo is only worth what its worth which is not a lot when its got a few years under its belt and miles on the clock [the same for all fiats]..its well documented that I went more than a bit over board with mods by the tune of 6k on the car which you wont recoup when sold on..bloody big mistake I know and Its not the first time its happened and may not be the last time :p..there is no fool like an old fool as the saying goes but I have done this for many years now and no car I have owned was left in its standard state..some thing you younger members need to think about before it gets out of control and left with empty pockets..the thing is now I have the Panda 1.2 which is a hoot to drive ..cheap to run and lends its self to tuning far more than any of the stilo's from stock.. fiat did a kit car conversion [rally car for the chinq] on the 1100 cc 8v engine and churned out a massive 150bhp on the unit :worship:which none of the stilo lumps can achieve with ease..:nerner: yep the bug is still with me and hard to fight..such is the nature of me the old guy around here..:bang:
At the end of the day now I really dont miss it all except the comfort bit that is ..stilo is long gone and so is the love I used to have for the car..

RIP stilo hello PANDA..:slayer:

The spring safety recall was done on monday this week, which is good!! :D

As for the warning errors, she says the "airbag failure" light comes on when someone is in the passenger seat....but if you turn the car off and they get out then turn it back on, it goes off....

I'm gonna take one last look over it today, but I'm set on getting it now. Its a step up and i should be able to shift the seicento without much hassle, due to the work done and low mileage!!

Thanks for all your help!! :D

Thank you!! :D

So looks like everything can be fixed... are these OCS units expensive?

Mat is around the £100 mark ..(y) try cleaning the contact in the connectors under the seats first though and plugging them back together..

Superb!!

£100 mark isnt too bad to get it working again, esp since im getting it so cheap. I'll just need to get this skyroof fixed easily and i'll be jamming!

Can 2nd hand ones be fitted or are they coded to the car specifically?
