Technical 24000 service

Hi rrope

I'm thinking of the Goodyear NCT5 as a replacement tyre.

What tyres where fitted to your car before you changed to the Goodyears and have you been able to tell yet if there is any difference with the road noise with the Goodyears.

At a 24000mile service the engine oil, filter, spark plug and pollen filter need changing. Mobil 1 is the most expensive oil say £30, Fiat filter £7, pollen filter £10, sparklugs £14 total £61 the rest is for 1.2 hrs labour. So you can work out if you are being overcharged or not. I think most would seem to be overcharged.

The Fiat book time for the 24k service is 2.5-3 hours apparantly. Mine also included a full visual/mechanical test of all major components plus a road test.

The thing to remember with servicing costs is that whilst FIAT operate a menu pricing system, this doesn't mean that all dealers will charge the same!

The cost of the service is made up of 3 elements:

1. Parts
2. Labour
3. VAT

Under the menu pricing system, all dealers should charge the same for the parts but the labour charges vary from garage to garage and region to region - for example my local dealer charges £64.95 per hour.

To illustrate this I contacted all the FIAT dealers within a 25 mile radius of Peterborough to find out the cost of the 24k service on my Stilo - the prices I received ranged from £183 to £235 and even though two of the garages contacted were part of the Priory group and were only about 15 miles apart, there was a difference of about £30 in the cost of the service!

In reply to Scorg, car has 17" alloys and lowered front and back by 35mm.Tyres are z rated so think I got a good deal out them for 130 suppiled and fitted. Dont know how they manage to service the Alfas whcih seem to sit much lower. Think it might be a ploy so they dont have to replace the tyres f.o.c after 5000miles when you take it back to them with illegal treads cos they cant fix the tracking!
