Hi all,

Well isn't it just bloody typical. Leg decided to give out again (awaiting op for knee replacement) and down I went like a sack of spuds which was a bit embarrassing. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I fell on my side with the key in my pocket and broke the bloody case. Key/remote still works and Fiat won't supply just the case (given me a quote of 130ish). Have seen a few 2nd hand ones on ebay and wonder if it is possible to just change the cases over. If it is could someone advise the best way without breaking it? Also, while I'm asking, is it possible to convert a none blip key (1st stilo had 2 remote keys newer one has 1 and a none remote key, bloody cost cuttering) into a blip one?
thanks
Steve

this is something im intrested in as well, i think what he is getting at is, is it possible to get just the plastic outside of the key fob without the inner gubbings, then swapping it all over?. I also have a broken one where the loop for the key ring goes though (i had a train door swing open on me pulling the key off the fob breaking it in the process).

Hi Roy,

I think the only way to do that would be to transplant the electronics from the broken fob into the donor fob and swap over the key part. Just remember your fob will not open any one else's car regardless of the key attached to it :D

Hi Phil & Roy,

Sorry, I have caused the confusion and should have kept it simple. OK, Standard stilo remote key (open/close/boot buttons) is the one that has broken case/shell and the transplant of the inside together with the key blade is my main interest.
I'm completely unsure if it's possible so any assistance appreciated.

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve,

I would say the transplant would be possible providing you can open the fob without breaking it. Try it you've nothing to loose, when I bought a new key I had to pay about £130 for the key along with a similar amount to code it to the car. So provided your careful you could save your self a lot of money.

Good Luck and let us know how you get on.

Can't see why you couldn't transplant the key and the inner gubbins to a new blue case. Just don't get the super glue in your eyes. (y)

OK all, job done.

Prize fiat badge off of case, underneath sits a philips screw. Remove battery from each. Remove screw. Prize 2 halves of case apart. Be careful not to lose spring from key blade. Do similar with replacement (cheap) fob from ebay or similar. Remove board from each and exchange from broken fob to new one. Remove immobiliser chip from new fob (do this 1st as it will give you an idea of removal as you don't want to break your original one), then remove and transplant same from original fob. Replace spring and blade button, slot blade (original, not new as I did, doh) over push button (only one way to do this) and turn it anti-clockwise for a couple of turns (otherwise when you fix top half you won't have any tension for the blade to open), refix screw, refix battery, check to ensure it operates your car still. glue fiat badge back into place and job done. 30 mins max.

Hope this helps

Many thanks for this info Steve, just done it myself.

I found the hardest bit though was prizing the Fiat badge from the case. My first go with the old key was a disaster, even with a tiny screwdriver I totally chewed up the case and eventually it slipped and made a huge gouge in the cover and badge.

Here's what I came up with to remove the badge without wrecking the case or the badge. Using an old pair of scissors, cut out a piece of tin can about 1" x 1/2", with the long side down the long axis of the can. Using some long nose pliers, gently increase the bend in the bit of tin more so the curve matches the radius of the Fiat badge. Now you should be able to carefully push the narrow end of the bit of tin in between the badge and the cover without damaging either - the badge is surprisingly thick at nearly 3mm so push it in firmly all the way (watch your fingers though). Now lever the bit of tin away from the badge and this should prize it up slightly, without damaging the plastic. If you repeat this 2 or 3 more times around the circumference of the badge you should have broken most of the adhesion of the sticky pad used to hold it in place. Then use a Sticky Fixer pad on the badge, you should now be able to rotate it fully to completely break the adhesion and then lift it out.

Just ordered one on fleabay, 8.99 all in not bad....
I was going to get a black one but was unsure if it would work as it has a different layout.
I had forgotton about this, anyways, does anyone know if the transducers in the fobs are are once only program or can they be re programed by the dealers, i ask as the key i have coming has all the gubbins and it may be worth keeping it as a spare..
Christ your right that fiat badge is a right pig to remove lol
cheers

"anyways, does anyone know if the transducers in the fobs are are once only program or can they be re programed by the dealers"
It's the other way around, they don't program the key fob, they program the car to accept the key fob transmitter frequencies but the metal key must be the correct one for the car

Confused? Not surprised. Have a look through this
