My car has started to make a really loud knocking noise when driving and seems to go away for a second when touching the brake or accelerator. I thought it might have been the driveshaft. But i took it into fiat and they are replacing the wheel bearing under the warranty which is good but said the driving flange is gone and needs replaced but im going to get that fixed elsewhere as they are charging £130 and tbh i dont have the money cos my car was in fiat last week and needed the steering column replaced and timing belt and i think its just the labour that is costing so much. Anyone have an idea of how much a driving flange is? and what it is?

I would think they mean this jobby, especially if they are removing the bearing.

This also shows the Fiat special tool in operation called "A CHISEL" only available by mail order:)

ahh thanks for the pic. yeah well they are replacing the wheel bearing the now at fiat under warranty and i get my car back later today but im not having the driving flange fixed as going to get that fixed where i got my bodykit and exhaust fitted as will be cheaper. anymore info on it would be good though as im sure wen i take it to the garage they prob wont have a clue what i am on about.

Flanges are often found on young females, but as they get older, the flange turns into a clacker valve.

I don't understand? Isnt the flange covered under warranty with the bearing:confused:

If the bearing going caused the damage to the flange (as it often does) then it's a "cause and effect" case.

I mean, if your wheel studs break and your wheel falls off do they just replace the studs and leave you to pick up the tab for the wheel?

Also I can't see how they can replace the bearing and not replace the flange if it needs doing. If they do then the next person will probably destroy the new bearing getting it off the old flange as they are a heavy interference fit

yup ure right Deckchair5 i phoned them up and mentioned how the driving flange is covered under the warranty and they are now fixing it for free. the reason they were not going to fix the driving flange was because when taking my wheels off last week one of the wheel bolts snapped and was stuck inside the hub.

Any idea why the stud snapped? had you been driving around with only 3 for a while?
I ask as I had one go on each side last year after fitting aftermarket wheels and notice you have too. It was the OE locking nuts that went on mine:bang:

yeah the wheel bolt broke, but i dont know why. it was when i was taking the wheels off and went to loosen the wheel bolt but half of it came out and the other half was stuck in the wheel hub. im putting it down to cheap wheel bolts that came with the alloys, so im gona buy some more expensive wheel bolts and hope it does not happen again!
