HI all , the exterior sliding door handle on my van i just bought was sitting slightly out like it had been pulled to hard . I took off the interior panel and released the handle heard a clonk (sounded like the cable falling off the handle hook)

Now i cant seem to find how to get the cable back onto the handle , would i have to drill out the pop rivets that hold the interior handle assembly to the door frame or is there an easy way of reattaching this cable to the handle ?

Any help would be great before i get the black and decker out.

If your door handles are like mine (2006 older scudo), they are held in by two torx screws on the inside of the door. There should be two metal coat hanger thickness rods connecting handle to the lock mechanism-these need to be removed before taking the handle out. When you say cable, do you mean these rods? Sometimes the plastic retaining clip fractures and you have to tie in with small cable ties. BTW there should be no need to remove the locking mechanism that's pop riveted to the door.

Its a new shape van, the thickness rods are the ones i mean. I cant seem to see how it will be possible to get the rod back on to the back of the handle without removing the pop riveted mechanism. I can't seem to get my hand up and around enough to find the end of the rod ? There must be an easy way of doing it :bang:

I can only comment on the old shape van...which I cannot imagine is vastly different. On mine 2 rods that connect to the handle are "L" shaped at the end where they locate in the lever arm holes in the fixed mechanism. They are held in place by a plastic piece that one end is on the rod and the other clips over the "L" end of the rod to keep it from falling out.
To relocate the rod into the handle needs the 2 "L" ends to be disconnected at the fixed mech and after loostening the 2 torx screws for the door handle-the handle is withdrawn with the rods still attached (or not as in this case)-(on this, the handle end of the rod it is a "U" shape)
I have a sneaky feeling the locating hole on the handle lever has fractured because there is no way these rods can be taken out any other way?
Hope this is clear as mud mate!

I have never drilled out the rivets and have done old and new models...thing is I can't remember what I done, I think I undone outer handle and slide the inner workings down and out and reassembled in reverse.

Thanks for the replies guys, i dont think the handle is fractured as it was working fine all be it was sitting proud as though it had been pulled to hard. I will persevere with locating the rod end before drilling, thats if i can remember where i parked it :D

Got it sorted, i assumed the handle would connect directly to a cable/rod. On this model (2007 on) the handle locates to the door mechanisim which is already connected to the rods.

The only tricky part is pulling the lever of the door mechanisim that works the door lock towards you before replacing the handle, as the handle hook must be behind this for it to work !(its through the handle hole behind the door skin)

Confused ? yeah thought so :D
