My GT has started cutting out when idle, mainly when im coming up to stop the revs drop below zero then cuts out. Any ideas? Its going to Fiat tomorrow for diagnostics. Just wondered if anyone could shed any light?

Yip Idle Control Valve(y)

The exact same thing was happening to mine a few months back. Car was stalling when you dropped the clutch or it would idle for about 10 secs then either rocket away up to 4000rpm or drop to zero and stall.

I managed to pick up the whole unit containing the idle control valve for £40 from scrappy. 1/2 hour job if you know what your doing.

There is a way of disconecting the valve from the ecu so that the car runs normally util you get it fixed. Don't ask how lol a mechanic friend of mine done so to allow me to drive to the scrappy for a new un!!

I suppose Fiat will tell me thats what the problem is. Is this why my injection System light comes on while idle and goes off once im in motion? Another thing that is concerning me is the oil coming out of the dump valve!

Sounds like a bigger probelm then :(

I didn't have anything else just the Engine Management light comig on and the stalling when in neutral or with the clutch down.

As i said before in your other thread give the idle control valve a good cleaning out with carb cleaner, the icv is located underneath a black cover at the rear of your engine bay. Do a search on puntosports.co.uk for 'idle control valve' and it should bring up some useful info.

Just got back from the Fiat garage....its the Lambda sensor! Took 2 1/2 hrs to come to that conclusion however so cost me £90!!!

Im having the same problem with my 60sx, it seems to cut out everytime i approach a junction!! does anyone no where bouts the Idle control valve is on a mk1? its a 1.2 8v. (1999)

cheers

I had the same problem and a dose of REDEX sorted it for me. Incredible how much it improved after this. Much cheaper than the nonsense the dealers tend to spin you...

Mine had similar problems cutting out while Idling. Went to Scrapyard and got a Throttle Position Sensor for £10 and it fixed the issue so thanks for the advice on this forum.

Went into Fiat afterwards for the seal that goes between the Throttle Body and the Air Filter Housing and told him what I needed it for.

He said for diagnostics it would have cost £60, the part new from Fiat £360 and fitting £100 so I'd say I've done extremely well for £10 doing it myself, easy job that took 20 mins to do.

have had various idle issues related to this in the past, culprit would probably be either Throttle Position Sensor, Idle Control Valve (cleanable), Lambda sensor or Crank Sensor

Why on earth people ever go to dealers for parts when places like Euro Car Parts have sales on most of the time is beyond me. If you're not going to do the job yourself at least give some custom to a local independent garage and it'll probably work out cheaper!

There some errors made by people in this post..

Idle Control Valves on a GT.. its either bolted to the cam cover (earlier versions, ie GT1) or on the inlet manifold itself, on top (later versions, ie GT3). If your GT is a GT2 then it could have either of the engines and thus either ICV.

Early GT1 Style:

Later GT3 Style:

To the person asking where its located on a 60, its part of the throttle body itself but can be changed - they rarely fail on the fire engines in my experience so thats on 55, 60 and 75s models

this diagram is of an SPI fire engine (55 and 60) - the ICV is item labelled 13

Hope that clears any confusion on ICV's..

Coming back to the OP for a second, you mention oil is coming out of your dump valve, this will not be related - there should be no oil in the intake tract, this points towards turbo seals failing usually. Few other things it could be but place to start is have the turbo checked. Pull some of the inlet pipes off, like the pipes from the intercooler, there should be no oil but if the turbo seals are gone/going you'll probably find small pools of oil in the lowest parts on the intake piping which from memory are in/out the intercooler.

I've had the same problem on three different GT's.

GT1 - crappy fuel filter starving the engine.
GT3 - Bodged exhaust choking the car and it had no Lambda sensor at all (Project Pigeon Poo).
GT3 again - Throttle position sensor had been painted blue by the previous owner.

All part of the fun.
