im a member of another forum also, but i assumed this is the best place to ask seeing its FIATFORUM ;)

basically, i remember reading that "a certain" model of which im not sure, of MK1 Punto, that has a 6 speed gearbox but the secondry difference is that the speedo is cable driven..

What punto am i looking to find in a scrapyeard etc, where i can grab myself a 6-speed set-up for my 1.1?

I think someone discussed this recently in the thread and pointed out that the ratios between the 5 and the 6 speed boxes are pretty similar especially on the final drive making the swap fairly pointless. the 6 speed was found in the 1.2 sporting from about 2001 on but not fitted to the 1.8HGT as not strong enough. I have no idea what would be needed to fit it to the Mk1

From driving a couple of 6 speed mk2's I seem to remember that normal road driving was pretty much constant stirring of cogs

any gearbox other then the one i have now will be a thousand times better, it goes through the gears too fast! if i try and hit 70, the engines doing over 5000 RPM and i know thats unsual, every other car i driven hits about 3000RPM.

I had in mind the GT gearbox, i thought bigger engine smaller ratio gears, better speed/revs. I thought of the 6 speed for particuarly doing 70, getting somewhere on time and the valves not dancing on the bonnet lol.

small engine = short ratios the 6 speed will go through the gears just as quick its just your arm will fatigue quicker because of the extra gear. unless you are going to add more torque to your engine fitting a longer gear box will be of no benefit as you will loose your acceleration.
the gear box in your car will be more or less matched to the power of your engine. ebay has a plethora of Punto gearboxes if you need a replacement.

Maybe back in its day, it seems rediculous to use as an every day car when you live in a place filled with hills, valves dance on the bonnet at 70mph, for instance this hill i have to face nown again, its 11% (so says the sign) and foot down in second will JUST make it, third, and were back to square one!

Maybe its the way i drive it? but i dont like to give it full throttle when not needed.. gonna eye up another gearbox, if no joy i'll have to go for an engine upgrade. Is there a 1.4 NON turbo out there?

Given the age and second hand prices of Puntos especially the Mk1s you would find it inevitably cheaper (and a hell of alot easier) to just buy a newer car with a bigger engine

you would have though, but i aint gonna pay another beeping grand on insurance to have 'a slightly better car' if i declair a bigger engine (upto 1.6 which means non tax class change) i'll only pay another £80!

I am lost for words.... Your insurance co will allow you to fit a 1.6 litre engine to a car which normally has a 1.1 litre engine and they will only charge you a additional £80 a year?

Yet to go and buy an unmodified 1.2litre safer car they will charge you £1000 a year more?

I don't know who your company is but I'm pretty sure you have misinterpreted something as NO insurance company would encourage you to modify your car.
all modifications have to go through the underwriters to be assessed individually, a 1.6 engine in a car not originally designed for it (1.1 brakes suspension etc) would pose a very significant insurance risk over a standard but newer 1.2 car

Also the punto mk1 1.6 was 1581cc the pre 2001 tax class system has a cut off at 1549cc so changing the engine would change it to the higher level tax bracket

Fit the 6 speed and you'll be changing gear even more often than the 5.

The Stilo box is said to have higher gearing, but if that's what you want larger tyres will accomplish the same thing (raising the overall gearing).

Early cars tend to have cable speedos, later cars electronic. But you can swap from one to the other very simply, just by changing the drives out.

strange, i thought that all mk1('96 - '99) have electronic speedos. i had on mine without engine temperature gauge, so i just bought one with that gauge, and easy swap, haven't see any cable driven speedo.

my mk1 revs up to 4 k to reach 70 mph, but i am driving mostly in city, an trying avoid motorways.
Was thinking about 6 speed gearbox, but find out, that it too much hassle get one, and no much benefits.

sell punto, and get car with bigger engine....

a gearbox wont sort this as said
its power you need
have you checked your engine is up to spec
