see below for picture, seems like a pipe is missing any advice on whether it is necessary or where i can get a replacement, thanks

yeah sorry picture got mucked up on upload i dunno why but basically if you look at an 1.2 8v engine there is the black box on top with fuel injection and below it the pipes leading too it are missing what seems like a pipe i was just wandering if its serious?

ok the attachment should show what i mean. the part from the pipes to the fuel injection bit

dont worry about it, it is just a intake pipe for warm air, i remember mine didnt have one when i bought it, i think people take them off so they get a cooler airfeed, and i think it helps make the air out of the blower a little warmer but that about it.

Summer is here - Leave the Pipe off
The engine will perform better with the cooler air feed (not as hot off the manifold)

But when it comes to winter
You may find it better on Fuel - And for warming up, if you stick the Missing Hot air feed pipe back on

A - the Engine will warm up faster
B - means your car will defrost faster (as rule A applies)
C - The Car wont be So copensating the fact the air is Oxygen Rich = Burns lots of fuel

D = the cost of a New Pipe Against Cost of fuel? I'd go for it :)

Shame the Mk2 dont have a similar idea - i'd be first to try it!

I had one on a BL Mini. It made absolutely no difference.

Maybe in very cold conditions it reduces carb (throttle body) icing but otherwise I dont think its needed. The Punto throttle body is already heated so icing should not be an issue anyway.

Mine 8v dont have a heated TB :(
It's just bolted onto the top of the engine

Eitherway - icing over wont be the problem :)
Its just warm air uses less fuel :)

Has anybody ever tried fitting a mk1 air box to a mk2?

Isn't there two small hoses going from the cooling system to the throttle body?

Warm air usually means more fuel used as the air is less dense so carries less oxygen.

Not on the 8v

Nope - only 2 that go near TB on the 8v is the Bulkhead ones, there is on the Head, obvs, but doesn't warm the TB :(

Would love to get some piks for you
BUT the car isn't here :(

With warm air tho - surly less oxygen = Less fuel needed to Burn at correct mixture

So Surly in winter - a Hot air feed is better?

Not really, its air mass not air volume that matters.

The amount of fuel needed to do the job (fuel being the energy source) is used by the engine with enough air pulled in to burn the fuel. If the air is less dense you need more of it = more pumping loss.

The small temperature difference might improve efficiency very slightly but when you consider the flame temperature compared to a few degrees warmer or colder air its almost unmeasurable. Dense air makes the biggest difference. Engines with a MAF sensor will compensate but make more top end power with cold air.

The pressure drop across the throttle valve chills the air. When its very cold and damp it can ice up the works. Carbs are affected much more than injection systems. The air heaters are to reduce icing during very cold weather. I suspect its a bit of a throw-back to the old days.
