One of the rear drums is binding. Before doing anything I loosened the hand brake adjuster inside the car. The drum was turning freely before I took it off to check the shoes. I did have to use a lot of hammering and levering to get it off.:(
When the drum was finally off I made sure the adjuster on the shoe was backed off so the shoes sit as far into the wheel cylinder as possible.
BTW the shoes are not very worn though drums will need replacing next time. I filed down the lip on drum edge.
Now I can push the drum on all the way and turn it ok. BUT, when I screw in the locator pins the binding starts. When the road wheel is on with all bolts tight then it is binding big time.
Anyone know what is happening? Maybe I’ve b******d the back plate:eek: Thanks for any info as I’m now clueless with it.

I believe its the worn edge on the drum that's now refusing to sit with your shoes. The struggle getting it apart hints that way.

Best bet is new drums. you can get axle sets on ebay (drums shoes and cylinders) from about £60 or £70. Also replace the return springs and clips. If the handbrake was weak its also worth replacing the drum actuating levers as they stretch with age so the hand brake becomes ineffective.

If you want to smarten up the car prime and paint the new drums. or even stove them

Thanks, thinking about what you said gonna replace the axle set then it's good for as long as we will need the car.
For right now, after a fresh look this morning, pulled back the shoes a bit off the backplate and scraped away the rusty gunge. Then put some copper grease on the contact points and had a really close look at getting the shoes central. Basic and I should have done that in the first place. I thought the shoes would kinda self central.:confused:All working well now.:)
