I just bought a Fiat Punto S 55, year 1997, and I had a few questions.

Where is the fuse box?
Where do I put the oil in?( I can't find the oil cap)
Is 10W/40 the right oil for the car?
How many quarts/liters of oil does the punto need for an oil change?
What kind of oil filter does it need?

I know where the dipstick is, but I don't want to start opening stuff if I don't know what it's for. I'm not really a car guy. I can replace fuses, change the oil, and do other standard maintenance things. I just can't find them on this car and I'm affraid I'll break something.

Hi mate,

1. The main fuesbox is behind the small plastic panel in the dash by your right knee (RHD) or left knee (LHD)
2. The oil goes in the black square plug on the op of the engine. Its on the top left hand side of the engine as you look at it. Its a rubber plug that simply pulls out.
3. 10w40 is fine to use in your engine.
4. a 5l bottle will be fine and will leave you some spare over for topping up etc. Always use the dipstic to reach the correct level and dont just put in a set amount.
5. It has a standard screw on type oil filter as apposed to a paper cartridge type. Its located at the front bottom of the engine, just in front of the sump.

Hope that helps,
Alan

I'd definitey suggest purchasing a Haynes guide for your Punto model. It covers all the stuff you posted in extensive detail with images and step-by-step guides. I got one for mine and I use it all the time, sometimes just for looking up values (such as tyre pressures or torque settings for wrenches) if not for a fully detailed guide on how to do something.

Sure does help. I thought that's where the oil went, but I've never seen an oil cap as a black rubber plug, so I figured I'd ask before I touched it.

The dipstick tends to get smothered when you top up the oil. So wait a while (for the oil to dribble down) before checking the level as its easy to overfill.

fiat fire engines have the most stupid oil fill design i can remember
even dafter than watching a woman top a beetle up through the dipstick hole many years ago
