Resoldering Power Steering Motor Relays

To check the solder joints you need,

Allen key - 4mm
Torx bit - T7 or T6
Soldering iron
Soldering wire
A steady hand
A good light source

1 - Take off fuse box cover
2 - Take of bottom steering cowling
3 - Unclip the motor wire from ECU
4 - Unbolt the motor, theres 3 hex head bolts, here you can use 8mm socket
4 - Take out motor and boss - leave boss in car as not to loose it
5 - Take off foam gasket (try not to rip it, if u do, dont worry)
6 - unsolder the 6 main wires beside each relay
7 - unscrew the 4 torx screws
8 - take out circuit board
flip it over and resolder all connections on relay, on each theres 3 main and 1 smaller one
9 - make sure you have plenty of solder on each one
10 - then reattach to motor, screw in 4 torx and bracket
11 - resolder main wires, you may have remove old solder to get wires back in fully
12 - reattach foam gasket
13 - reattach boss
14 - bolt back into place
15 - reconnect wires to computer

Then put key in, cross your fingers and start the car.

If it was a bad connection that was causing it, hopefully it will be fixed now.

Hope this guide helps someone.

Re: Resoldering Power Steering Motor Relays

Great guide....What I think I needed. 1 Question though....My car is a 1.2L 15V Punto Mk2 Reg 2000 and the power steering fault is doing it at random times and not continuous....Is this what I need to do or it will solve nothing?

for the small amount of time and effort it takes its worth a shot. Mine was on and off randomly until I done this. Been working fine ever since.

Re: Resoldering Power Steering Motor Relays

This is really helpful stuff. Just to add about dodgy solder on circuit boards -

Get yourself a good magnifying glass and look closely at the solder. If it looks sparkly like crystals or dull & grey it needs resoldering. If it looks flowing & smooth its a good joint.

Using an electronics soldering iron (Antex etc), heat the solder and suck if off with a solder sucker or solder removing tape. Then resolder the joint. Do them one at a time so the component cant fall off the board (unless you want to take it off!). Work quickly, so you dont overdo the heat as it will damage the circuit tracks and electronic components.

Hi all.

Just a bit more help i have included a picture step by step of stripping the motor and re-calibrating the motor, the software i use is FIAT ECU SCAN (google it) which anyone can buy and load on a laptop and the cable you need is a ELM327 available of ebay. The software will cost you 49 euros and Elm327 about 10 - 15.

I have heard the new snap-on modus/solus cand calibrate aswell but never tried it.

I have added notes on the pics to try and make it as easy as possilble but if you are unsure don`t break it or hurt yourself.

Any more questions or if this helps let me know.

cheers chris

you will get a free work out, eventually you'll have arms bigger than hulk hogan.

if power steering has failed, it just means there is no assistance. The steering will still work fine, just means it will be very very heavy (especially when parking)

Re: Resoldering Power Steering Motor Relays

Good info folks; quick question, do I have to re-calibrate or can I just try and re-solder or even replace relays without re-calibrating???

Re: Resoldering Power Steering Motor Relays

You can try the re-solder but from experiance it will keep going faulty unless you re-calibrate the torque sensor and steering angle sensor because you are removing the motor from a set position.

Give it a go though you have nothing to lose ?

cheers chris

Re: Resoldering Power Steering Motor Relays

Hello everyone,
thank you very much to forrest159, very good tutorial, I managed to complete all the steps and I still fails the switchboard of the steering column. the error is: communication interrupted and will not let me enter it. I wonder if something can be done so I can fix it and not having to buy a new one.
Thank you.

Re: Resoldering Power Steering Motor Relays

The ultimate fix is a service exchange column from BBA-Reman. Cost is about 180 and they say its plug & play.

Talking Re: Resoldering Power Steering Motor Relays

The power steering failed on my daughter's Mk2 a couple of weeks back. I ran through the advice in the first post resoldering all the relay joints, but to no avail - the damned thing still wasn't working. I checked the relays with a meter and discovered that one was faulty - it had shorted!

I spent hours trawling the internet to find a replacement relay and eventually discovered this seller on ebay - h**p://stores.ebay.co.uk/Gld-automotive . It's an Italian seller, so I used an online translator to ensure I was getting the correct item - less than twenty quid for a pair, delivered.

I bought a pair of relays and am keeping one as a 'just-in-case'.

Fixing the problem was a simple matter of removing the faulty relay and soldering in the replacement - job done.

Thanks for your 'how to' as it set me off on the right path.

Re: Resoldering Power Steering Motor Relays

Hi
How did you determine that a relay was faulty?

cheers

Re: Resoldering Power Steering Motor Relays

I used a multimeter, checking the relay contacts for continuity - the realys are identical and should, therefore, have given similar readings. One relay had no circuit continuity between pins, the other (the shorted one) had continuity between all pins.

There being a difference between the two indicated a fault with one - which one I didn't know until receiving the replacements and checking.

Hope this helps...

Re: Resoldering Power Steering Motor Relays

Thanks Sab very helpful as is the whole post. My sons car has had this intermittent fault which I originally cured by simply cleaning all of the conacts on the ecu by scraping them with a scalpel and this seemed to cure it for a couple of months but its failed again so I have bought an elm327bluetooth (which should arrive in a couple of days) and downloaded Fiatecuscan and will do the resoldering and check the relays to see if this solves it, I am not sure that I understand what to do with respect to calibrating. I assume Fiatecuscan guides you through the process. I will also read the fault codes.

Thanks to you as well Forest 159 for a great guide. Given that this problem is so common I would have thought this should be made into a sticky

cheers

Graham
