In the past week or so I've noticed a problem that when I shift from first to second and also from second to third, it's not a smooth shift all in that the speed drops very suddenly and I have to keep the pedal to the floor to bring the car back up to speed. I'm not too technically-minded so I'm not sure how to describe it better than that.

Thing is though, it only happens when I take the car out at first, once I driven around a bit and warmed it up it doesn't happen any more.

I had to jump start the car about a week ago but I can't remember if the problem was there beforehand.

it is probaply allright because the cars gears are always stiff in first start up because all te fluids are still cold when car gets hotter it gets better or dis appears..

my mk1 had shifting problems but they where common nearly everybody has it
on the mk2 its a lot better but thats probably cos its newer

I have a similar problem as well, where it judders/shakes a bit when I move from first to second gear whilst standing still. This happens only if I haven't driven the car for a few days and goes away after about 15 minutes..

Does it do any damage??

no in my opinion it doesnt do any damage if youre moving hardly at all then all cars will judder .. all comes down to clutch control .:)

BUT if the gears go crunching from 1st gear to second gear while on the go or shifting down.. with clutch fully down then you need to get worried because it then can be synchromesh or/and cog related problems in the gearbox ...>i know because ive had it before.

@micky magoo jumpstarting will not have caused this only thing it can < do damage to is the catalyctic converter.. which is in the exhaust to filter all the enviromently unfriendly gasses..

Hmm.. but mine's a Dualogic so strictly speaking the clutch is not in my control..

I've had the 'crunch' once or twice (when reversing), though its pretty rare..

Hmm.. still quite not convinced this is normal.. apparently there'll be a software patch to fix this in the coming weeks, as I've been told by my dealer. Just have to wait I guess.. :(

Still no news about the 'software update' - its driving me nuts as I really want to get this sorted! I've just emailed every Fiat dealer in my state asking for assistance; hopefully I'll get a reply from at least one of them and see what their thoughts are.. :(
