Can you take 225 wide tyres and stick them onto alloys that are recommended to be fitted with 205 wide tyres??

I have my 225/45/17 tyres at present on my wheels and they are in mint condition. Still loadsa tread left. Gonna buy new 17's except these one's are recommended tyres of 205/45/17??

Can I just swap them over and save myself a few quid on new tyres??

1) they may fit, but 7" ain't that wide, as pole says 7.5" or 8" is more likely,

do you know just how wide 225's are!! I mean look at the back of a BMW 330d or 530d for example, thats 225, on a bigger car and they still look mad(y)

2) they WILL NOT fit any punto, unless you've have your arch lips rolled over, and some new arch liners made up, a mk1 ,the tyre/wheel will strike the shock cover and or subframe:eek:

They fit the Punto fine!! No work done at all to the arches etc. And they don't rub on nought!

I already have the 225/45/17 tyres on my car and want to swap them onto my new wheels when I get them (if they fit)

TBH 100% totally truthfull, my car handles more predictably and with more grip in the dry and wet (verified by a mate, going round a roundabout before and after LOL) with the original steels with 13"x165 rubber:worship: , than with my14"x185 rubber (both sets use the exact same brand and model of tyre). the larger wheels make the steering unnervingly light (tryre pressure regardless), and it just understeers like funk, you turn the wheel hard and it just plows on ahead, with the 165's its fine, and will dig in and skitter round the corner

so was it decided that 225/40/17 will fit a Punto? I have a mk2, I've always had 205/35/17 but I have been offered some wheels with 225/35/17 (7.5j rim). Would this be ok without any arch work?

cheers

My Lotus was originally fitted with 215/50/15. These are still available be pricey.

Choices are 205 or 225 /50/15.
I went for 225.

Some rubbing on full lock on the Excel but I guess this would be a problem on a Fiat with bigger wheel arches.

For differences in speed indications check variations at;
