Drove home yesterday and about 5 miles from home the car lost power for about 15 seconds then BANG, followed by loud exhaust noises. Managed to get home without alerting the local police. Looked at it today and the middle box had exploded. Think what happened was the cat broke up and bits from this blocked the centre box (loss of power) then due to pressure build up the box just gave out. WOW !!!!!

jeeez that must of made a huge bang! i've heard of a collapsed CAT before but actually it blocking the centre pipe! is it just a new middle box then?

rear section and cat, was quoted £400 by kwik fit, but have found cat for £100+vat and rear section for about £60+vat. but will try and find a second hand one first

yep it went off with one hell of a bang

beat me too it, yeah just did a bit of research rather than going by my mate who said it was fine to decat (he owns a 69 mustang which explains why)

if i was to decat - what would be the best way to store the CAT, will it corrode or owt if it was kept inside nice and dry or would it be best of being left in the garage etc.

More likely that something stopped the ignition for a few seconds but the injection kept pumping fuel the unburnt fuel ended up in the hot cat & then ignited =1dead cat & an exploded silencer full of bits of cat! May be worth finding out what stopped the ignition sparks, dodgy lamda sensor or something else? One of the forums injection specialists may have an idea you don't want a repeat performance in your new exhaust!!!

has no-one thought that sum chav could of stuck sumthing down your exhaust?? then drove away &............BOOM! :bang:

........just a thought

The old trick of shoving a spud up the exhaust unlikely to cause an explosion & works almost instantly engine usually stalls not after 5 miles!

I agree with KeithT. Loss of ignition, and unburnt fuel has passed throught the whole system, and then ignited. On older cars we used to do this deliberately by turning the ignition off whilst coasting down a busy street, keep your foot slightly on the acc pedal to allow a good mixture to pass through the exhaust system. Flick the key back on and watch people hit the deck, dogs go mad, people get out of their own cars and look up their own tailpipes, i've seen it all:D . It was worse as we lived in an army town at the height of the IRA thing. The rear box would blow every week, and we would just weld them up. My Fiat 127 was ace for doing this, and so was a mk1 Fiesta. In fact anything, i even managed to do it on an old Honda C90. So long as it's not injected, and as long as it doesn't have a fuel cut off solenoid switch then you were in there. The best days of my life, and how they have spoiled it all with ECU, injected , and over engineered rubbish. You had to remember though, one click of the ignition, because two meant the steering lock came on.

Cats are ceramic!!

so now i know! its i knew there were precious metals inside, i didn't want to say store it in a way where any water inside the cat will damamge it,

cheers though (y)
