Just got home after losing all power in my steering. It cut off twice today while parking, steering went hard and wouldn't move but after restarting it was fine. Been shopping and got back to the car, started the engine and turned to the right and the steering went stiff. Tried the turning on and off but nothing. The steering light is on in the dash. Just want to know is it electrical/sensor. Is it going to cost me alot before Xmas and do I have to go to a fiat garage?

Thanks for your help

This usually occurs upon start up if you move the steering wheel, the sensor gets ''blocked' and interrupted and the steering wheel doesnt turn properly. The stilo lot and cento lot experience similar symptoms to the ones you are describing, and both sections have both done the same thing to cure the problem, whih is turn the engine off and back on again. This seems to sort the problem out.

Cheers for that, I will have a look in those sections about thier problems. I will go out in a bit and try it again.

No short cuts on this one.

It's a whole new steering column, I know because I have had one fitted.

No amount of engine on / off and other ideas will cure it.

About £650 fitted at a main dealer.

Just one of those things that affect the MK2

Cheers for the help (y)

I didnt know it was that serious on puntos, it shows how different each car is i suppose, quick fixes on some do not apply to others. Makes you think about things

keep an eye out for these columns on ebay i saw one once go for £90 new.
there are 2 different columns for teh punto so make sure you getting right oen

Becareful though....somehow alot of them have found their way from skips onto ebay....how can you tell if its a good or f****d one?

The only strange thing about my power steering, is that it went through a stage of fixing itself.

It failed for a week, then one day it worked again and continued for about 9 months fault free.

I really only got mine sorted as it was coming upto MOT time and it wasn't going to pass with a fault light on the dash!

Have a look at the following link,

http://www.bba-reman.com/content.aspx?content=fiat_punto_brava_bravo_electric_power_steering_failure

I went down the route of dealer and warrenty, but this could be a cheaper option.

I still have my old Power Steering rack if someone wants to make me an offer for it.

Spoke to the Fiat garage and he said hes come across the problem before it seems to the the power steering motor??? Actually more happy that the car is still under warrenty :worship:

cause it was brand new one lol still in fiat box :D

i wouldnt by a second hand one as know how likely they are to bust anyway so having allredy done a load of miles done help.

but wooo warratny repair huh? i love that kind :D

Box is no problem as is the white cover at end of shaft, just look for marks on the 4 mounting holes best way to check.

£650 fitted? There are 2 types one slightly more expensive but from memory around £450 + hour labour.

I've got a punto mrk 2 sporting - If i turn the steering wheel around to the full lock (usually when parking), the power steering turns off.

Must be a fairly common fault!

My advice - Don't 'whip' the steering wheel round too fast and it wont happen!

If i turn the engine off then back on again its fine!! :)

Bit strange though innit!!

Weird....

Hi mate,

Its not really a common fault. If when it fails it brings up the red PAS failure light then it should also produce a fault code so that you can pinpoint where the problem is. If it were me i would have it checked out as its your steering at the end of the day (not that it would completely fail on you!).

Cheers,
Alan
