Hi, I have a punto 1.2 8v and have a problem with the air bag light being on and failed mot, I have checked powers and grounds and continuity of the wiring to the module, all seem OK, I have used multi scan to try to communicate with the module but to no avail, when looking in the CAN list of configured control units there are only 5 units, and the airbag is not there, tried the proxi configure and no change, I assume I need to get the airbag module onto this can list to stand a Chance of getting the air bags working ?? Or I might just be missing somthing simple..

Thanks for the reply, I have been searching the common airbag problems, but to no avail, their isn’t much about ecu communication issues with multi ecu scan with the correct leads and adapters or other scan tools I have tried. I am going re check the wiring etc when I get home, just in case missed anything
Thanks peter

Continuity checks are the next thing. unplug the airbag ECU connector and make sure all the grounds and 12V supply (ies) are correct ad that the CAN pins on the ECU both connect to the EOBD connector. Don't forget to check for shorts to ground or between lines on the CAN bus. Between lins could rad as low as 60 ohms depending on the termination arrangement. less than 50 ohms A toB is a problem. If the ECU has power and the CAN connection is OK if there is no communiction you probably have a faulty ECU.

Thank for the reply, I have rechecked the wiring, power and ground are good and can carry load, the k line between the airbag module and obd connector has good continuity and is not shorted to earth. I checked powers and grounds at the obd connector all good.
The multiecuscan when using the kkl vag com lead can talk to the engine ecu, so I assume that the software and interface work, but when you add the red adaptor (for air bags) you get no comm with airbag module, I have even gone as far as altering the kkl interface by jumping the pins so pin 3 goes to pin 7 to iliminate the adaptor lead.
I have already swapped the module with no change, I think I am left with either getting another module to try, or finding an another similar punto to try the multiecuscan tool with to see if it has the ability to talk to the airbag module ??

Sadly and rather commonly on this age of punto the Airbag ECU goes bad the main symptom of which is you can't connect and often the ECU needs replacing.

If you do have to go down this route you need to make sure you get a replacement ECU with the same numbers on as the one in the car, cheapest and easiest place to look is usually eBay.

I'm confused, the original post said you were trying CAN, but now you say you have a KL interface???
What year is your car and what make and model is the airbag ECU?
It does sound like a ECU problem but some of the later car had CAN interfaces on the airbag ECU (Autoliv and Continental).

Sorry if I confused you, I have confused myself. The car is a 2003 punto 1.2 8v with a TRW airbag module.
After reading the forum, there were lots of air bag issues, that seem to be fixed by a proxi alignment, the list of modules had 5 in it and no air bag, I assumed the all I need to do was get the airbag on the list for it to work.
It was only after looking at the wiring and seeing only one wire communication and more reading did I realise it was not a CAN module but k line.
I have ordered another matching number module to try, or failing that one working will see if I can find someone who can repair the old one ??
Thanks for your reply, Peter

There are different versions of MES available to download. I Tried the newest one and it wouldn't talk to the ECU's on my Mk2/B for some reason, I downloaded one of the older versions and it works no problem at all. Worth a try anyway, incidentally this was also to reset the Airbag light, i really must get round to modifying the earthing on the isolation switch as I get the light appear every few months or so

Hi, the airbag on this Punto is not CAN connected, as I a originally thought, it a K line connection.
I have the subscribed 4.4 version of MES and use the vag com KKL lead and adaptor 2 (the red one) to connect to the car with.
The car is a 2003 1.2 8v

Just a quick update, success... Working airbag !!, turned out to be the module that was faulty, the original one and the 3 "working" modules off eBay, went to the scrap yard this morning and found a matching module, fitted it and we have comm's and a working light.
Just does to show that even "working" replacement parts don't work, and send you round in circles.
Many thanks to all who replied and helped (y)

hi did you have to remove fault via diag reader ? after fitting airbag module
thanks

Hi, used MES to clear codes after fitting a working module, I was surprised how many faulty modules there are for sale "as working when removed" that when you fit them they don't communicate ... You think you missing somthing when your not..
