No Ignition when I turn the key, (engine tries to kick in) then steering red light is on, fuel consumption yellow light blinks on and off and fuel indicator remains zero even if I know that I have fuel. When I switch off the key the clock display blinks and I hear like a soft clicking noise from the steering column or dashboard just behind close by. The sound remains even if I remove the key out and goes away only when I open the door???

The fault took place 2 months ago but it went, again a week ago and went and now three consecutive mornings and no start at all. Today I tried in the afternoon (temp was 30C) and it started normally and car fully functional. Drove 10km without problems. I took it to the mechanic and the computer gave a key mismatch code. However, I tried with the normal and spare key and both unsuccessful. It's odd that both keys got faulty in the same time and then afterall it worked well this afternoon.

What could the fault be ??? A quick search indicates something re RPM sensor (Lambda sensor) or earth of car.

Any help or similar experiences?

My Punto MK2 is 8Valva, petrol, 114,000 miles, 3 door, made in 1999.

under the airfilter is the engine ecu remove the earth wire connection to it from the loom clean bright everything and reconnect do the same with the battery and the leads that bolt on

Going to the mechanic and will tell him about this. He also thinks it is the earth wiring, and I recall I had corrosion at the back lights socket, maybe it has something to do. During the last 2 years or so, I had a yellow lightbulb warning light on in the dashboard, which indicates some electric/earth fault too, but since the car operated normally, I ignored.
