Hi guys,

I have a 2000 Punto Mk2 1.2 8v and I'm experiencing the following problem:

When I do a cold start and drive away, the car resists during the first 150 meters ONLY.

Let me define 'resists':

When I push the throttle the car accelerates, but the engine has trouble breaking through the 2000 RPM "barrier", as if it has to go through a certain mechanical resistance/drag. This resistance period lasts like 2 seconds, and only happens during the acceleration in the first 150 meters driving.

Another symptom that I experience during the resistance periods, is that when I take my foot off the throttle, the car decelerates more than normal, it becomes sort of like a bunny hop. So I can feel the resistance both during acceleration as well as without any throttle.

Note: when I press the clutch, the mechanical resistance is gone immediately.

I've read quite a few posts about engine hesitation, being linked to bad HT leads. This could explain my engine resistance while accelerating, however I'm really doubting whether this can also cause this sort of "mechanical resistance".

Note: I have a CAN scan tool (OBDLink SX) and used MultiECUScan to check for any errors, but there are no errors whatsoever.

Does anyone recognize my symptoms?

Thanks for all your help in advance!

Kind regards,
Martijn

Peter and Ziggy,

Thanks a lot for your help! I will take a look at the throttle body and IAC valve and will try out both your advices.
Ziggy: The feeling of being pulled back / pulling something heavy covers my symptoms exactly! Am glad you recognized/confirmed it.

I will follow up on you guys on the progress of solving the issue.

Regards,
Martijn

No he doesn't, he stated it's a Dutch registered 2000 model.
It can be build several months earlier.
Surely it would not be a MK2 if it had the valve you listed. he STATES it is a MK2, and,This is a MK2 forum. !

The Mk2 was introduced in 1999, the first were build late 1998......
If it's a 1998-1999 build version, it does have a separate IAC.

The Mk2 was not even launched until the Sept 1999 Frankfurt show .

I 'somehow doubt' there would be 1998 models..

My April 1985 new registered Alfa Romeo GTV-6 was build in 1983...
My wife's Fiat Palio was build in Turkey sept. 1999, registered new in Holland June 2000.....
Everything is possible, I'm convinced the First Punto Mk2 was build late 1998, and sold sometime in 1999...
Fill in the VIN of the car at ePER on top of this page, it'll show the exact build date and day.

It all doesn't realy matter, the OP should have a look under the bonnet, and it will be clear if his IAC is removable.
Two years ago I changed the same IAC at our Palio 1,6-16V, it works great, and is very inexpensive compare to an original Marelli IAC...

I think it is safe to say the Mk2 does not have the valve.
Registering a car and the time frame since it was built is one thing. Launching a new model in Sept 1999 rules out 1998 models. Apples and Oranges.

Edit - ps, Nice one on the GTV - great car ! :)

30.000mls from new, all original ( except for the Ansa exhaust) and rustfree.
Dark grey metallic and light brown Recaro interior..

Excellent Peter :D
I love the GTV-6 !

The UK Government have a cunning plan to make cars fall apart with special destructive chemicals on the road. The rest of Europe (apart form possibly Germany) doesnt use the same formula it would appear. It is a dasterdly plan by the government to make people buy newer cars and pay more tax.

I think they are sprayed underneath with hyd:ROFLMAO:ouric acid when they arrive in the UK.:cry:
