Hi There,

I have a fiat punto Active 8, 04 plate and i noticed i had some clutch slippage a few days ago. My partner was driving it the other day and basically broke down on the M1. She thought the car had run out of petrol so i went out with petrol can. Anyway, i got to her and immediately put the petrol in without checking anything else first. The car started fine but has no drive. The clutch still feels the same operationally, but i can select all gears with or without the clutch whist the engine is running. As i noticed the clutch was slipping initially (high revving but no significant pull) - is this probably a clutch replacement?

Many Thanks

Rob

Thanks for your reply Oldhammer,

Is the clutch plate part of a new clutch assembly or another more expensive repair?

Thanks

Thanks Brendon, Oldhammer,

Yes - basically i can select any gear and nothing happens whether clutch is engaged or not. I can get a new clutch kit from euro car parts for approx £60 (they are having a sale at the mo). Was thinking of buying that and getting a quote from a mobile mechanic for labour. Either that or Mr Clutch quoted me £210 inclusive which didn't seem too bad.

Just to say - cheers Brendan, Oldhammer,

Just wanted to check with you more experienced guys to confirm it is actually a clutch problem

Many thanks

You might be Best to get a 'Trusty mobile mech.
rather than using any Fastfit outfit.

Someone in the Trade can get parts cheaper
so it might work out cheaper to get who ever does the work to order or go fetch parts.. obviously ask for receipt so you know they arnt adding ££s on.

Ive just had a gearbox rebuild and new clutch kit on mine (none fiat)
and the company iused got the parts in a lot cheaper than icouid.

Im not a fan of Eurocarpart's. Quality is getting very bad with there stuff
but iguess that's why they are cheap.

is it a petrol punto..?,
if so 1242cc, then it's an easy job, with sensibly priced parts,

sounds like it's worn out.., but worth getting somebody to move the foot pedal while you check the slave cylinder ( under battery tray /on TOP of g-box) actually moves the clutch arm.

Cheers Oldhammer,

I'm actually sort of "stuck" in Hertfordshire (st albans) at the mo, staying here for the xmas period. I live in Hampshire. GreenFlag got the car back to where i'm staying and they said they would move the car to a place of repair so that why i thought of Mr Clutch (one in Watford). I'll have to source mobile mechanics in st albans area - could you advise me what would be a fair price for a mobile mechanic to for this repair, as i would sooner go down that route instead of getting GreenFlag out again.

Many Thanks

Probably just a new clutch kit. Select second and drop the clutch. If it doesn't stall the plate has probably worn out.

or select 1st gear, and THEN crank engine, =should result in forward motion,

worn out friction plate ,follows the slipping you seemed to detect the other day,

only other real possibility is contamination..,
and that's also easiest fixed by a new clutch plate / kit.:(

if getting somebody else do the work, beware they may well charge additionally for machining a scored flywheel - if the clutch has gone right down to rivets..:bang:

Cheers Varesecrazy,

yes its a 1.2 petrol Active 8, I suppose i would have to get that slave cylinder checked by a mechanic, which is why i think a mobile mechanic would be a better option

Many thanks
