hi all

my 55 seems 2 have a sudden hesitation at low revs particularly in first gear!
the car seems 2 slow as u give more gas at low revs then suddenly picks up in a surge!!

the spark -plugs have been changed bar 1 which i simply couldnt remove and all ht's are replaced. also use redex. ne ideas or ne 1 suffering a similar prob?

cheers

Hi everyone,

I've got the same problem as above. I'm new to this forum... any help that you could give would be great. This "hesitation then surge" problem makes driving my (otherwise pretty cool) Punto distinctly unpleasurable.

Mine's a 96 Punto 55s 1.1 litre by the way.

Looking through the other pages of this forum it seems that it might be either Lambda sensor or ignition coils. Have many others found this to be the case.

The "hesitation" and then surge doesn't always happen. Sometimes I accellerate and, hey, it all goes smoothly. Other times it really hesitates and then bang! Off you go. It cab be quite jarring, and I'm sure it does the drivetrain no favours.

It doesn't always happen in 1st or 2nd gear though. It just seems like it's a low-rev problem because I can feel it happening as I accellerate during motorway driving.

Any ideas? Am I on the right track with coils or Lambda sensor?

If so, which would you check first?

My Cinq Sporting does this, but only when it's particularly cold. Does your punto do it all the time or only when it's cold?

Cinq owner, Punto on the way!

It does it particularly when it's cold but it still occurs (to a leser degree) when it's running warm.

So yours was sorted by replacing coils hey? What was the cost of doing that?

hi! mine has a similar problem to, but not just in the first or 2nd gears. Mine seems to be fine one day, and then another day hopeless. also, it only seems to happen to me when i first use the car, whether its warm or cold outside. after it has done it once or twice when i first start using it, it wont do it anymore whilst the engine is running???? mine is a 55sx, and i have not got a clue what the problem is!! [:(!] i will be grateful for any response on this topic too.

yeh mine does it more when cold but it still occurs when warm and pisses me off a treat!!!. Sometimes when i floor it in floor from standstill at a certain point at low revs the car justs freezes and wonttravel at all, once the engine cut out as well!!

I have replaced both coils and lambda sensor is new, spark plugs and ht leads are new so im not sure whether it is a fuelling problem. I have fuel filter ready to replace old one but cant get the fuel hoses off it!! the car now struggles to rev freely at all seems like something is restricting it!!! ne ideas

thanks

Does anyone know how to check if the coils and lambda sensor are working ok? I've got a multimeter available to me but I don't know what I'm looking for.

Also, a new development - when driving at high speeds, ie motorway driving the hesitation occurs cyclically... ie, about every 5 seconds the power drops slightly and then returns to normal. Quite odd really! Does this "ring a bell" with anyone?

Yeah, mines a 55sx also with the same type of problem. Brought it to a garage to get it checked out but they didn't find anything. Thing is its happy to sit there ticking over, its only when i'm in gear at low rev's. Bit embarassing when it starts playing up, girlfriends complaining about whiplash, looks like we are doing 'bohemian rapsody' (Waynes world style!!!). Would be nice to get this sorted if anybody has any ideas...

mine, also a 55 idles fine, and only does this when first used. annoying when pulling out of busy junctions!!!!!! i found out that my air filter (a flap inside actually) only lets cold air in all the time, and not the warm air from above the manifold on startup (like it should). does anybody know if this is the cause??

my girl friend has a hgt bravo the power kicks in about 3000 revs otherwise its dead. feels like a turbo just kicks in
she replaced the airflow meter and its all good now got a bit more power at lower revs picks up quicker, that might be the same reason but a 2.0L 20v its abit different from the 1.1 8valve

Perfectly normal mate i get the same thing with my 1.2 16v sporting. It does feel like a turbo kicking in which kinda feels good because of the sudden power gain.

Sensible mods go far

the hesitation that you are goin on about is caused im almost certain by the ecu,my 55 didnt do it b4 i got a new ecu,but after i fitted a new one i got the same thing...hope this helps, get the ecu tested,im sure its a minor problem that anyone can live with anyway.
