Hi,

I have a punto Mk2b 1.2 8V, and when i start the car when engine is cold,
there is a loud noise that sounds like a belt is slipping, and it get louder
when i rev up the engine.
The noise sound like it's coming from the clutch/gear area.
The noise stay the same if it's in gear or not, or if the clutch pedal is pressed or not.
After 10-15 minutes of driving the noise is almost disappear.

The timing belt was replaced, and the auxiliary belt is also quite new.
Can it be the clutch bearing making that noise?

I recorded the noise and uploaded to youtube. (There is a slight wind noise in the recording)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsJUuTcny9w&feature=youtu.be

Thank you.

try your foot on clutch out of gear if noise goes as release bearing touches diapghrapm then its likely the release bearing
can really tell with the noise though on your link

Thank you all for the replies.

The auxiliary belt was replaced a few months ago, and the noise did start not long after the auxiliary belt was replaced.
Garage said that the noise is from the timing, so because it was almost 5 years
from the last time it was done, they changed the timing belt and tensioner bearing.

Unfortunately that did not solve the problem, so after that they said it is
from the clutch bearing. At that point i told them not to do anything.
I'm going to a different garage and i would like to solve that noise problem,
but i don't want them to also make a bad diagnostic.

If i'll put a little soap on the inner side of the auxiliary belt, should it make
it stop slipping (if the problem is there) ?
How do you tighten the belt?

The noise does not go away when i press the clutch pedal,
in gear or out of gear.

There is room for adjustment on the alternator you will see if you have a look, can't believe they said it was timing belt.

"experts" eh..!!

I've got an annoying whine on mine, wether I've got a passenger or not :D

did the cambelt and Tensioner as it needed doing anyway,

( next step will be remove the crank pulley , drop off belt, and refit,
thereby eliminating the Alternator AND it's belt -10 minute job ;))

if you've got access to some basic tools adjusting the alternator drive belt is relatively simple,

ask if you want pics of the crank pulley job, :)

good luck,

as a quick + easy test ( before tools) you should be able to reach down and flex the belt,
it should be fairly tight, any more than @ 40 mm of movement up + down is slack.

From what i understood they thought the timing tensioner bearing was
not good.

"Varesecrazy", i checked the auxiliary belt and it seems to be tight, although i didn't
measured the movement of the belt.
Did you mean 40mm or 4mm ?

Does soap on the inner side of the belt should make it quiet if it's slipping?
(Just for the testing)

Thank you all.

Edit: I just measured the movement of the belt and it's maybe 5-10mm.
i'll check tomorrow again in daylight.

Ok, so i looked at the service manual (although it's for the Mk2) and they have an explanation for
models with or without air conditioning.
I have air conditioning, and according to the manual there is a tensioner there
that is automatically tension the belt.

I'm having the feeling that the noise does come from the gear/clutch area,
but i don't think it's the release bearing because the noise is the same
if the clutch is engaged or not.
Are there other bearings that can make that sound?

Thank you.

Hi same problem, same noise mine is my clutch release bearing!!! U might wanna get that checked !! :)

hi again,
ok, try and find a quiet section of level road with the car doing around 20 mph/ 30 kph,
put the car in neutral, bring the clutch back UP,
can you hear the noise now..??,

Charlie

Hi,
sorry for the late response.
I tried that, and you can hear the noise when in neutral and clutch pedal is up,
while doing around 30 KPH.

When the clutch pedal is not pressed (clutch is engaged), the release bearing is spinning or not?

Hi,
Is it making the noise always? (no matter if clutch is pressed or not)

normally if it's the realease bearing ;
it will "rattle" with the pedal up ..in neutral,

depressing the pedal loads the bearing + the noise stops,

OK.. as different scenario..,

do you have access to axle stands ?,

elevate the front of the car ( keep rear wheels on ground and parking brake applied),

rotate 1 front wheel at a time see if you can hear ANY difference in sound from 1 wheel to the other,
then carefully start engine.. listen for sounds as the front wheels will "IDLE" - go around slowly due to DRAG -,
best to have a competent person sitting in drivers seat while you look around front wheels , gearbox area..again listen for sounds,

THEN go for a high gear 4th / 5th, let the clutch up and the engine idle.., the wheels should be going around relatively quickly ( @ 20 / 30 MPH,
then listen for noises "driving" and coasting = with clutch depressed,

often you will hear / feel vibration through the floorpan doing this,

good luck, stay safe, and let us know what you find,

Charlie

Thank you, but i don't have axle stands.
I'll update after i'll be in the garage, hopefully this week.

An update:

I was at the garage, and they said it's from the release bearing.
Strangely, the noise became much lower last few days (before i went to
the garage).
