Winter tyres

Punto mk2/2b owners! What winter tyres (if any) are you planning on using this year?

I've decided to get a set of steelies and put winter tyres on them to use each year. This should protect my alloys a bit and be cheaper than swapping the tyres around twice a year

The standard punto wheels are 165/70/R14 so I've been looking at tyres...

What would you reccomend guys? Doesn't have to necessarily be from any of the above options

Cheers Wrightyy!

I still use Vredstine SnowTrac3's myself. If I had to use one of the three you've linked though it would be the Avons as I use their summer rubber sometimes and have always been pleased

Re: Winter tyres

Cheers guys I've noticed most of those tyres you linked have been tested alot by various people. I guess real life testing is a much better statistic to look at compared to the A-G rating label system

Re: Winter tyres

Uniroyal MS plus 6

Had a set on the rear last year, it make it alot more stable on slusshy stuff and snow, it meant i could control speed 10x better downhills with my handbrake

This year - its a full set BRING ON THE SNOW!

If all else fails - i've got chains

quick scurry around found them cheaper on Camskill
However - they are out of stock at the moment....

Re: Winter tyres

Will I need different wheel bolts for the steelies or are they the same length as the ones I'm using on my alloys now?

Re: Winter tyres

wow where do some of you guys live? ive lived all over the country all weathers and never needed winter tyres on a front wheel drive car especially so i can pull the handbrake on on a hill, hell in the winter of 1980 i was the only vehicle that bad january that made it up the a1 and that was in a rear wheel drive mk1 escort van with 145x12 tyres on,ok i had to dig the van out once near boroughbridge but still made it to durham albeit with a ton of ice formed on my pancake airfilter and a fuel gauge dropping as i drove

i know compounds have changed but the art is in control not how good a tread pattern you have

Re: Winter tyres

The most significant thing is probably that 145 number. Our old Minor 1000 would fly around in the snow when modern cars were skating past us. If anyone is going the winter tyre route I suggest you get a set of steelies and fit the narrowest tyre approved for the car.

winter tyres are not all about going through snow, they are better at stopping

Mainly about better performance at lower temperatures.

Doubt I'll be getting a set for the MR2 tub!
