under the bonnet....
Hey,

Right I know they are easy to replace to a certain extent, but what I need to know what tools I need and things I'll need to take apart itself on the car as I'll be doing this today when the new hub and bearing arrive! Also because I don't have a presser which would of made the job a lot easier to do but this method I know is by getting a big socket e.g. 32-36mm put it on top of bearing and gently tap with hammer until it slides into the hub, is that method okay to use of course taking extra care while doing it.

Thanks!

For those that need to know what my car is its a Punto MK2 (2000) W Reg.

i think hammering bearings in is best left to the 1970's
personally i always fit a s.h hub rather than invest in a press seeing as bearings are so good these days
i dont want to water your plants but i would neither buy a bearing off an internet site or hammer it in
i would buy the bearing from my factors and take it to a few garages i know and one of them would press the new bearing in for less than £10 for me or free if they were feeling generous

sorry

I've ordered the hub from Euro Car Parts not the bearing as I'll be getting that myself shortly, wasn't aware garages would do that without getting arsey about it? :D Surely hammering is still okay to do on today's bearing yeah I wouldn't use a hammer straight on the bearing that'd just blow my money down the drain! How much are bearings at Motor Factors? And could you possibly answer my other question what tools I need and what parts on the car I need to take apart to get access to the wheel hub bolts.

Thanks :)

you need a driveshaft socket for starters with a long neck
bought one last week but cant remember the size 32mm i think
15mm for track rod end
17 and 15 for strut to hub
13mm for pinch bolt on balljoint
lots of penetrating oil
wire brush
hot tea and cake
rubber backed yellow gloves to save knuckles
sturdy axle stand
15 mm i think on caliper carrier

so just normal tools other than driveshaft nut remember this is stacked over so unstake it before attempting to undo it,if you have alloys it needs the wheel off so get big mate to stomp on brake pedal as you crack off,i use a 6 foot scaffold pole and standard 1/2 inch extensions (not ratchet bar)

hope that helps a little

still dont know why you didnt buy s/h hub though:confused:

Bearings are usually cheapest at Bearing Factors, rather than Motor Factors (of which Euro Car Parts is one).

Any garage with a press will do it for beer money (while the boss isn't looking) -- or a small engineering works. Problem with the socket method here is that you're very unlikely to have a socket big enough.

I prefer local factors like andrew page who mostly have people that have in depth knowledge rather than a phone call and hope right bit comes on van

Thing with bearing factors is they need at least outer bits so they can see the size/measure for you but i agree its where ive been in the past to save lots of money
Just dont go with a hyundai bearing as hyundai make their own so make them to obscure sizes (or they did last time i needed one for a pony no not a horse:D)

Cheers guys, yeah I got the bearing from a local shop called valve shop, couldn't argue with £15 :D and for the hub ordered from ECP (eurocarparts) are taking the mick on delivery said today and nothing! I paid £3.95 for express....yeah right! Anyone else had problems with this company? And s and b what you mean by s/h hub, sorry if that sounds dumb and noobish :p

Thanks!

s/h= second hand pre owned former life:D:)
yep ive had problems with them and they deliver ina van to me or they would if i used them
i dont/wont unless im very confident in their abilities, like the stack of batteries i got off them last year on a good deal via a flyer

i'd be tempted to put s/h in as i have a scrapy who have alsorts all the time :)
if the car was a little bit older or mega miles

For now tho - i'd be tempted to fit new bearings too!!

Ziggy

I'm one of many that falls for the crap that comes out of garages mouths, saying I needed a new hub.....after my discovery earlier I don't so I haven't touched the car.....this is one of many reasons I don't trust garages

And for bearings they are fine as far as I'm aware, although going to keep the new hub and bearing pressed on it for when I actually do need it :)
