Hello all,

I have a 03 Fiat Punto 1.9JTD that has been regularly serviced.
It is getting close to the 48K and as i have an issue with one of the beams (did something wrong after changing the dip-beam and regulating the height) I thought it's time for servicing.

I have read that it is possible to DIY but I am not completely confident I can actually do a proper job. Also, given that - as said on the service booklet - I should be changing the brakes pads etc I am not completely sure I have the right expertise.

Here my questions:
The car has been serviced 6 times, more or less every year (5K per year!), but I am not sure what operations have been carried out each time apart from oil and the basics.
- What the cost would be at 48K? (I have just called someone who said it's £300! hell of a lot!).
- What is the cost of the following services - approx?
I am not sure if it's worth keeping a car if every service I'll have to spend £300 just for changing a couple of things!

Where is it possible to find step by step guides for servicing? I have read there's a manual for this but does not cover the diesel version of the servicing.. so: useless!

Thank you very much!

Best,

Average full service for a diesel is about £150. Make sure that includes the diesel fuel filter as some don't. A lot of good garages may throw in a light alignment for free with a service otherwise its about £20. All down to where you go really but for £300 i'd want the coolant, air con, pollen filter and brake fluid doing on top of the normal service so look elsewhere cause thats pricey.

A lot of beam problems are simply that the bulb is not sitting flat in it's holder. If the headlight was adjusted a bit after you can drive up to a wall at night on dip beam and fiddle with the bad one until it's level with the other. At your mileage oil changes are the biggest item every year and that is easy to learn to do and satisfying. Brake pads are visible from the outside world and only need replacing when the thickness goes below a minimum which you can see and measure.
It may be that 'someone' is planning a timing belt change which is pushing up the cost a bit. Could 'someone' be asked what they are going to do for £300.
If you're up for it start taking on the simpler jobs one at at time , you will get loads of good advice from the good people here.

Have been working on an video how to for punto servicing (still a work in progress but you can check it out at www.youtube.com/puntohowto) anyone can service a car it's just tools and time.

I also have a 1.9 diesel so will be adding these to the videos over time.

Who quoted you £300 and what was included for that? It's quite possible you'll be needed a new cambelt soon due to the age of it more than the mileage
