Red hot brake discs

I've just replaced the front brake discs on my Mk2 Punto 8V 1.2.

After fitting the new discs and putting the pads back in the callipers, I heard a bit of friction between the pads and the discs when I turned the wheel (before I lowered it to the ground).

I've been out in the car today for 10 mins, tested the brakes, they work fine but the discs were absolutely red hot when I got back.

Is it normal for the pads to rub slightly against the discs when driving?

I reckon this is causing them to get hot while I'm driving.

Cheers for ur help!!

Re: Red hot brake discs

Your disks will always get hot - You can't stop that. It's part of the way they work. Your disk brakes work using friction, a by-product of friction is heat.

AFAIK, the pads and disks always rub together very slightly.

Re: Red hot brake discs

There's normally a little contact between pad and disc with the brakes off, this isn't enough to generate any noticeable heat though.

A lot of heat is generated when you actually brake though, and it takes the discs a while to cool down. Sounds like your brakes are fine to me.

Re: Red hot brake discs

You say you tested the brakes for 10 minutes, so obviously they'll get hot then, but how long did you drive for without heavy braking? I think it can take quite a while for the disks to cool back down, especially if you're not moving. The only times I've had red-hot disks are when:
The rear brake was binding slightly. This squealed a lot too.
A session of "spirited" driving down some back lanes. I actually got the pads smoking quite heavily
Try again, and drive for a decent period with as little braking as possible, possibly even doing the final stop on the handbrake. Then see how how they are.

Ahhh right, I suppose the solid disc wouldn't help in comparison to my vented ones, and seeing as I can barely see the brakes I suppose I don't know what could be going on behind the wheels really, still though, for normal driving the brakes should not glowing.
