<font face="Trebuchet MS">You know, I don't know what it is, but there seems to be this thing surrounding TD engines and I'm not sure what. Those I've spoken to say they're great, if not better than petrol versions.

My question is this - What tuning options are available? There is seriously little info out there. Someone has suggested 'chipping'? I have a MkII JTD, wondering what I can do to make it that much faster.

Your informed suggestions?

Dave - a dump valve, on a diesel[:0] they don't work in the same way as petrol cars, you have to have specific kits for diesels, needless to say you can't get it for the Punto.
Plus - a dump valve wouldn't make you go faster.

Chip it for a vast improvement in bhp and torque.

The TD is more reliable than the GT engine but no where near as powerful.
 
The way Turbo cars work is that they blow air into the inlet of the engine.

On a petrol engine you have a butterfly for the throttle, and when you're tanking along flat out at mahoosive boost and go to change gear, you lift off the throttle which closes the butterfly, so the turbo is blowing hard against a basically dead end. This can 'stall' or severely slow the turbo down, and it takes a short time to spin up properly again to give max power when you floor it again in the next gear. A dump valve vents the excess pressure caused during this and helps keep the turbo spinning, so you get less lag when you accelerate again. Won't actually give you any more power, but will improve acceleration times because the power comes back quicker after changes. It goes 'Psssshhhh' too, which is nice.

A Turbo diesel engine has no butterfly or throttle body - the turbo blows straight into the inlet on the engine unrestricted at all times, and the power produced is governed by the amount and timing of the fuel that is injected. If there is no butterfly to close, the turbo pressure will not need venting like described above as it will never hit this dead end, just the wastegate will lift to control max boost pressures quietly.

Most modern Turbo Diesels run at 1 bar boost and higher, whereas unmodified Petrol cars generally run less than that.
