Hi, I've got a W reg mk2 Punto 1.2 8V with 126,000 miles on the clock.
Unfortunately, it has developed a head gasket failure, with all the tell tale signs of overheating, loss of coolant, steam out the exhaust, and emulsification under the oil filler cap.

It's got nearly a full years MOT.

Basically, I'm in the dilemma of whether to fix it or not, and hoped some of you my be able to lend some advice.

I'm a student, and had decided that when I returned to uni in late September, that I'd sell it as I didn't really have a use for it while away, and couldn't really afford the insurance. However, I do need a car for the rest of the summer due to work commitments. If I did not need a car for the next month, this would be fairly straight-forward decision.

My options are to; repair it, use it for the rest of the summer and sell it, sell it now as spares and repairs, or break it for parts, obviously being left without a car.

What sort of money could I expect to sell it for as spares and repairs? It has a years MOT, so the head gasket really is the only thing that's stopping anyone from running the car. It has done alot of miles, but the bodywork is in good condition for its age, and there are no signs of rust.

Alternatively I could break it for parts. It has had new rear drums and shoes fitted within the last month, as well as a couple of other bits and pieces. I've also added a fair few things to the car (basically has a complete sporting interior, minus the seats), alloys, stereo etc. I've kept all the original parts, so I could in theory take these parts off and sell them separately.

Any advice would be appreciated, and information about the cost of head gasket repair, how much Punto's of this age are going for currently (as spares and repairs and fully functioing without problems).

Cheers.

Renewing HG is straightforward but you will need a good socket set, the manual, a torque wrench (could borrow/hire one) and patience; if you renew the timing belt & tensioner as well then parts will be about £50; head should be skimmed so about £20 or less for that. Half a day's work for you; less than 2 hours for a mechanic; worth shoppong around for a quote; certainly worth repairing; lots of posts on this topic

Its worth haveing a go ur self, got nothing to lose, i did H/G for under £100, head gasket, gaskets and bolt kit, timing belt, w/pump and tensioner.i Dint have head skimmed but that will be between £15 - 25. Also id change the coolant and engine oil and filter. Its pretty easy to do,theres a guide on the forum
