probably the brake fluid is low. Open the bonnet, take off the brake fluid cap and take out the filter and check the level. Top up with Dot4 fluid

Most likely it is due to a low fluid level. If so, don't just top it up, find out why it is low. Hopefully it is just that the pads are worn low and not something catastrophic. The filter in the neck of the reservoir can become blocked, making it look full when it is not, so do check this is not blocked when checking levels.

The other less-likely reason is a faulty fluid level sender unit. Unfortunately, in an '03 Punto this will be integrated into the reservoir, so you will need the full assembly at ~£35. It makes sense to renew the brake fluid whilst replacing this.

Don't just assume that when you take the lid off if you see fluid it is OK. As someone has posted, the fluid sometimes does not flow into the reservoir because it cannot get past the filter. Lift the filter out with your finger and clean it with some meths.

If pads arent worn or filter blocked check the wheels for traces of leak. Could be seal on the brake cylinders split or just worn. Will have to replace the pads anyway if that is the case
