hey lads, the odd time when i start off a really loud high pitched screech comes from my mk2 and will either go when i change into second or third.it only sounds when i accelerate as once i take my foot off it stops. i think it is inclined to happen on cold damp nights. it happened tonight. i was grand for the first mile and den i stopped at a junction and set off and it started and den went away after third gear.any ideas?

alternator belt?

possibly.i think its coming from the drivers side of the engine bay anyway

clutch bearing? Mine did this when it was on the way out.

Clutch. Definately. lol!

If RHD, alternator belt or cam belt tensioner. If it goes away when you lower the back EMF, its alternator belt.

the back emf?sorry i dnt know wat that means. its rhd. its not the changing gears that makes the noise its accelerating

Using electrical stuff in the car, lights, wipers, heater blower, HRW, music etc, imparts a resistance in the alternator which is 'back electro motive force'

Switch things off to see if noise goes away.

im glad you said that cos i think its when i turn on the rear de-mister.not always but ders a slight trend!

If the alternator belt is shot, the cam belt wont be far behind. They are not usually replaced alone. A proper service along with ALL of the belts will save lots of grief and lots of money in breakdown repairs.
