My alternator packed up the other day and now provides no charge what so ever to the battery so i bought a replacement and i am going to change it out.

I was just wondering if there is a guide or some useful tips people could give me regarding this job, noticed the alternator is in quite an awkward position:(

On my 1.2 Active you have to remove the wheel arch liner main and centre panels for reasonable access to the alternator lower pivot bolt.

i have got the alternator off but cant seem to find a way out of the engine bay with it, do you need to remove an engine bracket to gain more access

Not sure if it applies to yours, but had similar problem on my MK1 TD.
It was a beast of a job just getting the blown one detached, only then discovering there was no way to get it out.
Did some searching on here to find that you can remove the half shaft and swap it out from the bottom, or strip everything above it.
Opted for the latter, took nearly a day to get the darned thing out as the water pump had to come off too, to do that the pulley wheel on the pump had to come off etc etc.

Think it was easier to remove from above than go the halfshaft route.

Whatever you do for the cost make sure you put new alt & water pump belts on whilst your at it.

Deepest sympathies on having to do it, never want to do it again that’s for sure.

decron i had already found that but doesnt help that much, the easiest way was to remove the lower engine mount and push the engine forward creating a gap big enough for the alternator to go through, but thanks for your really helpful reply
