I have a Punto 1.2 16v ELX (99-03). I have problems with the rpm on my car. It runs normal on 750 rpm, but sometimes goes down to 500 rpm. In the garage they told me that is the lambda sensor. I have just one on the rear side. The light has never turned on on my board. One guy told me that I can clean it and that I don`t need to change it if the light don`t turn on. Can anyone explain it to me how can I clean the lambda sensor or what should I clean? And if you can put some pictures where is the lambda sensor situated on the car and how can I clean it. Thanks guys.

If your car is similar to mine it is in the manifold in either both or one of these holes shown by green circle in the picture below.

To clean you can use carburetor cleaner ( if you dont have that you can use vinegar or coke, leave to soak for a few hours, then scrub, then soak again, then scrub then wash of. Or until its clean, you get the idea. Sounds stupid but it supposedly works, dont hold me to it though because ive never used it (y)) then just use a toothbrush to clean it, make sure it is free from cleaner and dirt before you put it back in, just use a hose or power washer.

Or just buy a new one (y)

Hope this helps, phil

You need to check which Lambda is playing up. The 'examiner' programme should be able to flash each one in turn and find out which one is giving the dodgy reading.

A faulty lambda will cause poor running without switching the light on beacuse it doesn't know its doing anything wrong.

Taking one out is a sod of a job and will often cause damage. Better to pop a new one in.

Dont want to hi-jack the thread but do you mind if i ask why ?

They leave a residue, carb cleaner doesn't. They're not designed to get very wet.

Regardless I've never seen a lambda be 'fixed' by cleaning it and I personally just fit a new one as it's easier...
