It can be done though but you need to check out wiring diagram an re-wire the plugs, you could fit different temperature sensor and fit aftermarket temperature gauge though.I just bought a punto mk1 M reg but it doesn't have a rev counter or temp gauge.

new on this website, really need help for timing my punto 98 s reg 1.2 16v 85sx.just had head gasket done and now i've messed-up the timing!(big mistake) i've sold the car and its going this sunday(1st of feb 09')!!!
but must get this fix A.S.A.P i dont have any locking tools and can't get hold of them no one wants to fix it either.there's no timing marks.any help would be a god send, info, how to or any pic's.thanks in advance.

you are a bit buggered with out tools really.
try a 3/8 extension bar in the front cam locking hole.
4 bits of dowel exactly the same length down the spark plug holes to get pistons all level. you need a flat edge to make sure tops of dowel ar all level, i use spirit level, but ignore the bubble.
loosen cam pulley fit belt, tension belt then do cam pulley bolt up.

if you have already tried to turn the engine over with the timing out then its too late, all the valves be bent.

remind me not to buy a car off you :p

wouldnt need fixing again tomorrow, if it was done right today ;)

Hi, as far as the crankshaft pulley goes, is TDC the same mark on the 8v as the 16v?

I've been in my engine bay for 3 or 4 hours today, fitting and re-fitting my timing belt.
I haven't seen this pin-hole or dimple on the auxiliary pulley, as per the photograph. Should it have one and if not, does it still matter which way round the pulley goes back on?

I have a '97 75SX

I will do it for you no probs only take 5 mins to sort out easy if you have the tools:cool:

Is the crankshaft pulley timing mark the one on the alternator drive pulley cos I aint got one on the crankshaft timing belt sprocket. Thanks

no sounds like some one has gone a fitted a 16v sprocket to your crank, remove rubber square on gearbox an set to tdc using mark on fly wheel

The crank sprocket and pulley look exactly as in pics only there is no mark on crank sprocket. There is a mark on alternator drive pulley which I assumed was to be lined up with mark on strengthening web. There is locating dowel on sprocket with corresponding hole in pulley as you describe and circle in red but once th front pulley is removed from crankshaft. no mark on sprocket other than little locating pin. Thanks again.

Re: PHOTOS of timing marks

have set my engine up like this (after supectedly acciently advancing cam by 3-4 teeth, it still ran but roughly and poor response time) in the pictures, but she won't run!!!!

She turns over for 2-3seconds then stops with a loud electrical sounding clunk (like relay is cutting starter motor out).

hi i found that wen i fitted the pully thats terns the alternator on the crank pullt i fittid it wrong and it was not starting then i fitted it correctly ond it started

by the way it helped a lot reading all this as i was struggleing on my punto so thanks

hello dave iam a new user i have a 1.2 16 valve 1999 punto i have timed up the cams but cant find timing marks on crank should i time up no1 piston tdc or all pistons level cant seem to find any answers please help dave

Some unlucky people, me included, have no markings on the crank shaft. Where the nipple is on the sprocket though, following through clockwise past one bolt hole the line should be exactly halfway between that hole and the next (that the alternator pulley bolts into). When it does line up I found that after you put the alternator pulley back on there is a slight 'v' notch missing on the edge of the pulley which points directly 12 o'clock when the crankshaft is in the right position. Hope that helps

Sod that fannying about- every Fiat Tech uses the simple timing line and flywheel notch under the bell housing plug. Far more accurate and simpler.

The 8V lumps are no touch. :)

Be careful with 16V. Always carefully turn the crank by hand with the new belt tensioned to be sure nothing hits. The 16V really should be done with locking blocks - about £25 a pair.
IMHO not worth the risk of doing it without and getting it wrong.

On my HGT (which has its cams locked for TDC on #1), I used a dowel down the #1 plug hole and I checked with the flywheel marker. The latter was out by at least 6mm radially.

you have a 1.2 16v you need tools to lock cams and tools to make sure all pistons are level, and belt must be tensioned with cam pulley loose
