Don't want to jump to conclusions but this happened to my girlfriend just before her ECU packed in.

Could be PLENTY of other things too but it's something to prepare for just in case.

Incidentally she got the "Engine" warning light for a while (which rather oddly would sometimes clear when filling up with petrol) prior to it eventually refusing to play ball.

Hers is a MK2 by the way.

I may have suggested this before, but the best idea for that car is petrol and a box of matches. I can't believe the bad luck you've had with it!

Leave it and bring on the Stilo!! Was that ECU fault on every mk2?

punto has 4 probs atm

1. windscreen wipers judder on the way back down on the slow option (only since winter)
2. brakes make a horrible steel on steel scratch noise, but new brakes 3 weeks ago.
3. handbrake light comes on as handbrake is loose no idea on how to tighten
4. this new one that started this morning.

Well the wiper judder is a common one and easily fixed apparently (the motor needs some contacts de-greasing apparently - it's on the forum somewhere, I need to do it to my girl's punto).

Handbrake adjuster is behing the rear ashtray I believe (take the small tray out).

just been raining all the time and i cant be bothered to do anything to the car when its raining. im hopeing the wet weather was due to the car switching off this morning but it was at working temp and everything.

Has your engine warning light come on at all (just by itself) at any point?

It's the only real thing that happened before the ECU eventually packed in (and it then sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders).

no nothing poped up at all just died when pushing clutch in with brake but no jumping or kick back just died and free falled so to speak to a stop i didnt even notice it,

i would have seen the light as the handbrake one is always poping up so i have to smack the handbrake down or get my g/f to hold it down so i would have seen it.

might be battery as it hasnt been changed for 4 years

Mine did this, the dealer replaced the engine flow map sensor and the problem went away. :
