hi there.
When i turn the wheel right and go forward or backwards i get a loud knocking/grinding noise from the left hand side.
instinct would tell me that its the left outer cv joint?
or wheel bearing.
anyone else experienced this?
it doesnt happen in neutral and only when i use some throttle ie the car is accelerating. i live in milton keynes so as you can imagine the roundabouts are making this problem quite annoying.

it if is the cv joint are they hard to replace? i know i can get a new one for 15quid.

cheers
lewis

CV joints are pretty much zero maintainence, just as long as the neoprene cover has not been breached. Examine the cover carefully, opening all the folds to look for cracks. Look for obvious signs of grease being spun out under centripetal acceleration too. If there is not evidence of a leak then it is unlikely to be the CV joint, unless something very unusual has happened.

CV joints run on ball-bearings, swimming in a neoprene tank of grease. Because there is no friction, wear is very unusual. The only way they do tend to wear is if the seal splits and the grease spins out. This allows dirt to get in which causes wear. Both my CVs have 120,000 miles on them, and are not treated gently.

Of course, there could be a rare failure in yours, I'm just saying it's unlikely.

well... i had a look earlier. and moved the boot. when i did this i had loads of water and crap come out so changed the left outer cv joint and the problem is solved!

What are they like to replace? Gonna have to do mine at somepoint and wondered how easy it is? Anything to look out for? How long did it take roughly?

Cheers

I left mine too long and it took the driveshaft out with it, dont make the same mistake! its pretty simple if you got the tools, but its only about 1-2h labour from a garage.

Ah right, ok then! I shall get on that soon then! When you say right tools, any particular special tools required? I'm pretty handy when it comes to fixing the car, but as its a bit nippy out there, i dont wanna get half way through to find i need a special tool. And got my haynes manual (bible) ;)

Thanks
