Hello,

Just wanna say this place is great, really big help for me and my Fiat.

Ok i have a Punto Sporting 1.2 16v on a W plate

Back in 2006 i had my cambelt changed at a local village garage (not a fiat garage) cost around £100 i think. Think there was around 50k on the clock then, can someone confirm when the camblet should be changed on my car please ?

Ever since the cambelt has been replaced when u rev the engine in any gear to 2500rpm there a funny rattling/buzzing sound :( the sound stops at around 3000rpm

Took it back to the garage and they found nothing wrong and the cars been fine since it was done, just really annoying sound.

Anyone got any ideas what could be causing it ?

Thanks Ben

the auto data book says check and adjust if necessary at 36k and replace at 72k, the noise sounds like it could be something vibrating, cam belt cover perhaps,

Ok cheers mate.

Cars at 69K at the moment, so might have to start thinking about changing it again.

Hopefully if i get it changed will stop the annoying sound aswell.

Any idea on a price for a cambelt change from a Fiat dealer ?

Where abouts is the noise coming from when you are driving? Is it the passenger side? I only ask as I am taking my 2001 sporting in for a major service in the next couple of weeks as I have a similar noise at low revs. Am planning on getting a full service and bleeding the coolant, changing Gear box oil and cam belt too. I am avoiding the Fiat dealership tho as they are bound to charge through the roof.

Thanks

Yes, but the car is on a W plate. It needed done in 2005. 5 years/72k. Although Fiat reccomend it gets changed every 3 years/36k now after so many have been failing.

All i can tell you its coming from under the bonnet. Possibly more drivers side, not sure though never been drivng in it as a passanger.

It started straight after i had the cambelt done, 2 years ago. Garage checked it all out and found nothing. Just something i have to live with.

its gotta be worth checking all the bolt on the belt cover are tightend as that could cause a rattle, and it may be that the mechanics test drove it and could not hear the sound but as you no its there you can notice it easilly

As above check belt cover, also air filter housing - intake pipe - and anything else that was disturbed when the belt was done. Get someone responsible to rev the engine a bit while you listen round the engine, you may be able to pinpoint the noise. Good luck

Maybe a tin heat shield on the exhaust?
Probably a coincidental result or perhaps damaged when the engine moved (I think the engine mount has to come off to change the cambelt on the 16v).

If the cambelt was changed at around 50k, I don't think it needs doing again until about 100k. Well, personally I wouldn't pay to have it changed again. Do these engines actually have a habit of breaking the belt - I don't think they do?

No their not especially known for snapping belts but then they do it tends to be around the 70k mark (recommended 72k) so as I result I check mine after 36k and change it at about 55kish. I think 3yrs and 36k is a tad excessive and OTT. If it was a 1.8 HGT its a compeltly different storey (as its essentially a Alfa twinspark engine with single spark head).

Hi there

I have a noise very similar, but only when decelerating not accelerating. My garage found that I had a loose heat shield which rattled at 2800rpm, so they re-did the clips and it was fine... until I ragged it across the Peak district a bit too fast and now the same problem!!!

So will take it back in and talk to them about it again, ah

Hope that is helpful?
Rich
