Firstly sorry for flooding the forum with questions, as a lot of you will probably know my last JTD HGT was written off and we've finally found and bought what I think is a good one.
We drove one over in Birmingham which seemed very slow
We drove another down south that had some serious issues but it felt pretty nippy.
We then drove and bought our new one, its an '04 reg so slightly older but slightly lower mileage, it feels fast enough but just doesn't seem to have quite as much pull, especially in the lower gears.
Our last one smoked a bit when accelerating hard but had no problems re: the MOT smoke test (unfortunately I don't have the results anymore as the insurance company took it).
I realise that you get differences between engines but I've been thinking more and more that the last one may have been mapped, it also returned extremely good fuel economy when driven right, its liftetime average was 62mpg and we got over 70 on a drive to france then amsterdam.
Is there anyway for me to tell? i'm guessing the only thing I could do is write to the previous owner and ask but I doubt i'll get a response.
I've hear (and seen with Fabia VRS's) horror stories Re: Bad maps but our last car was amazingly reliable and just a bloody great car (maybe we just got a well treated well run in example?).
Thanks for your thoughts.

smoke on hard acceleration would point to a remap and very good mpg as the hgtjtd isn't supposed to be as good as the jtd, the best mpg i've had is 67
but 60-63 on mway is what i usually get

mine smoked with its 1st remap but i've since had the map changed, more power and no smoke (y)

We didn't ever reset the computer so all we ever had was its liftetime average (over 36,000 miles) which settled at 62 but went up to 68 ish I believe on the way to Paris then Amsterdam which hints at a really high instant consumption for that drive.
Dave: I'd love to but to be honest i'm worried about the insurance implications, have you got any examples of before and after power data? it would be interesting to have a look.
