Hello,

I bought a Punto 1.1S 1997P and it only came with one <font color="maroon">RED</font id="maroon"> key. People have suggested cloning <font color="navy">BLUE</font id="navy"> keys at Timpsons etc and being a brave/foolish sort I gave it a shot with the red one.
The new key, whilst Blue in colour, contains a copy of the transponder from the Red key if I understand the cutting chap correctly. It seems to work, but leaves the yellow (code) light on, unlike the original Red key which works without an illumination.
Given the car works even with the light on, am I to expect problems using this new key or doesn't it really matter?
Any thoughts appreciated!

Jason

when the code ecu sees the code for the red key or your cloned red key it will assume you are trying too code new keys into the system and leave the code light on as you described.
why didnt you just buy a regualar key and code that into the ecu since you allready had a red one?

Thanks for response. Does that mean I should have just ask the locksmith for the key already "blank" as it were or do I need to buy a key for programming in the ECU from a real Fiat dealer?
(Wierd thing is that that the light doesn't come on with my original red key which I think means it can't be a perfect clone.)

who knows? red keys have a removable transponder, perhaps thats got something too do with it.
as for what key you need i know the fiat suppled ones have a code in them from the factory and only require cutting too fit the lock then coding into the system using the regular red key method, i have no idea how pattern keys come although id assume the same.

k thanks.
Sound like to do things right I need either to get a couple of blank keys from the cutter and try them (pity he has to cut 'em first as I'll have to pay to try), or get them from Fiat. I'll give Fiat a ring and find out the price.

£34.51 per key from my local Fiat garage and apparently I need two of them! (can't just program one it seems). They also told me I'm not meant to drive with the red key. Evidently the previous owner has been driving with the red key for quite some time so it obviously doesn't do anything too nasty!
Charlottet yeah I've seen lots of people saying same (blue ones just clone ok @ cutters apparently). Personally I'd never sell/keep a car with only one key - doesn't seem right somehow!

thats true, you need at least 3 keys including the red too code a system corectly.

there are some places that can make a blue from a red, but timpsons is not one of them, keys r us (don't know if they are national) can do it did a couple for us came out to car and set them up as well one never worked so the redid them, now i have red key, and 2 blues that work as blue but are red in colour[:0]

If you have the red key then get 2 Fiat blanks get them cut then open the owners handbook and turn to the section that tells you how to code in your new keys, you can drive around till the cows come home with the red key but if you lose it your stuffed its not worth taking the chance just do it right first time.

yeah sounds right. I'm trying to get a Punto manual from somewhere (eBay etc), mine didn't come with one. If only I'd have known all this before hand I'd have negotiated another £100 off for the new keys etc - still guess I'm neither the first or the last. Thanks.
