Well yesterday my dad was on his way to work in my punto because he was getting my brake pads renewed and a chip in my windscreen taken out( for the 2nd time in two weeks) going along the A41 when my cars gear cables snap leaving the car on the side of the road unable to drive!

Is this a common problem with them snapping?

Lucky for me he works for fiat etc otherwise would have cost me and arm and a leg, due to only working part time.

Re: Problems

You mean the clutch cable snapped.

It happens to everyone eventually.

Re: Problems

the mk2 16v 6speed used cable linkages so maybe he means that? if thats the case this would be the first time i've ever heard of it happening.

if you do mean clutch cable then it can easily happen on any car that uses a cable (generally cables are no longer used in favor of a hydraulic system). however the clutch cable wouldnt cost an arm and a leg, not even an arm, its a cheap and easy job.

Re: Problems

Hello mate,

Its the first i've heard of the gear cable snapping. I wouldnt have thought that there was enough load on the cable to snap it as it is quite thick. Unless it has coroded through of course. When you get it off it would be interesting to know where it has snapped and if it was due to corrosion.

Cheers,
Alan

nah apparently two of the gear cables snapped. Not the clutch cable. O well ive got it fixed now. Quite a common problem apparently.

Don't know what rele happened tbh, it was getting harder to enter a gear easily and then yesterday two cables snapped. Now its fixed the gears feel much lighter
