Hi would a n engine from a t reg 1.2 punto be ok to put in a y reg one or are there 2 many changes. thanks for looking

not blown it up (yet) just looking at options what would be easyer fix or change as not sure if head gasket or rings have gone, low compresion on #4 comes up when I put oil in bore so still not sure, think its a 60 its a 2001 1.2 was told its common for gasket to go but not rings so heres hoping. can you get the whole top end stuff ie gaskets seals cam belt ect as 1 kit or are they seperates. thanks for looking dizzy1

yea it's likely the head gasket

you can get the hole kit from fiat not too pricey

make sure you get the head skimmed when you do it

and put plenty of antifreeze/corrosion inhibitor in to make sure it doesn't happen again

dead easy job to do

there is a few stikeys about the head torque settings and tightening order
cam belt timing also here on the forum

Cheers for advice will be haveing ago this weekend when I get back. dizzy1 (y)

The change would be mk1 to mk2...not sure if the engine bays are the same size...I ahve a feeling mk2 are slightly larger so might be awkward.

Check your cam cover. Mk2 Punto's went to phase3 around 2001 and went to sequential injection with a phase sensor running off the cam pulley (on right hand side next between the cambelt cover and oil filler cap). It's likely there's minor differences in the head casting too.

The engine mountings are different in a Mk2 (bolted to cylinder head) and Mk1 (bolted to block), I'm not sure if the fixing holes will be there on an earlier engine.

The sump is different too (Mk2's only hold 3 litres of oil).

Personally I'd take the head off first and see what the gasket is like.
By the way, Fiat head gasket sets come with every gasket needed after removing and stripping the head, all except the head bolts (obviously).

I don't believe any mk1 engine is compatible with any mk2 punto

what are you talking about he's doing the head gasket now anyway as that's what's wrong

make sure you check the head bolts for thinning

I have got to change the engine in my wifes 01 Punto 8 valve as it`s blown and her engine is the one with the cam sensor on top of the rocker cover, I can get an 03 engine which does not have the sensor so can someone please tell me if it`s possible to change the cams and cam covers over so that the new engine has got the cam sensor in place and should then match the wiring? Thanks for any help or advice on this matter. Steve

nice thread from 3 years ago lol

Now if i'm right in saying - You can put a Phases Sensor engine into a Car which didnt have one - it wont know any difference :)

But i cant remember if you can put a Non- Phase into a Phase required engine

Not sure of where the wiring goes - but if its plug and play - i cant see why you couldnt swap cam covers so the sensor is present - as i'm pretty sure you still need the cars original ECU for Immbo Reasons

In my eyes i cant see why not - but i'd wait and see if someone else can confirm if a Non Phase can go into a Phase Car with it been modified
