Hi

I have a faulty ECU and I'm considering buying one on eBay. The cheapers ones appear to straight out of a vehicle. Can they be connected without something being done to clear out the old settings from the previous car?

IMy current ECU is an IAW 8F.5T does anyone know if this the correct ECU for a 1996 N Reg Fiat Punto 75SX?

thanks in advance

Rick

very dificult to do if you dont know what your doing

as they have coded keys that arelinked to the engine ecu

i have to go right now but will be on tomoro and explain easactly how to do it if you like

by the way how do you know/ who told you the engine ecu is faulty it might be something else

ps have you got a red key that fits the vehicles locks

this makes the job of swaping ecus much easier as locks dont need to be swaped

Hi

Thanks for the response.

The ECU was plugged into a Fiat dealers system a few years ago when tick-over was a bit erratic and they suggested it might be at fault. But it sounded like they wanted to mess around with lots of other bits making it a very expensive job. So I left things as they were. Since then the cut-out problem has arrived and another garage thought the ECU was running hotter than it should. Although the ECU wouldn't register on their computer.

I have the red key and recently had to use it following a battery recharge.

I have someone to help me if I get into difficulties changing the ECU, but it looks straight forward. My understanding of them is they need resetting if disconnected. But I wasn't sure if it meant it only applied to the original one on the car. Or if one from another car would recalculate itself to suit the car.

Cheers

ecus are coded to the key, you cannot swap them

However pre 1995 (I think its only M reg) didnt have an imobiliser so you can use that as a direct swap.

However your fault sounds TPS or ICV related. Do a search on those terms...

Hi Lowtechguy

If, as you say, you can not swap ECUs, how comes they are so many of them available on eBay?

Am I missing something here?

Cheers

Rick

thanks Dave

I've seen them advertised with ignition lock and wondered why. Sounds like I might be taking on more than I should. I've found there's a company here in Poole who specialise in second hand ECUs, I intend paying them a visit sometime.

cheers

Rick
