I'm sure this has been covered, but I would really apreciate some advice here please.
This is my Son's first car, not even passed his test yet because of the dreaded virus.
It a 1.4 Multiair with about 55K on the clock, & in great condition. Is been fine since we bought it in October.
Its started missing the only code I ever get is always P0301. I've put new plugs in, Swapped the coil packs around (have a new set on order too), but always number 1 cyl. I do have compression too.
When it starts playing up, which is virtually all the time now, it appears to be chucking plent of unburnt fuel out of the exhaust.
Is this beginning to sound like a multiair actuator fault?

Hello to you both..

With the new plugs.. do they now all look the same colour?

What are you using to scan for errors.. so kit is VAG centric
.doesnt give accurate results on Italian kit

If you are within an hour of Winchester..
It could save you some grief ;)

Hi,
Just using a cheapo fault code reader, I have 2 of them, a Foxwell unit plus an ebay jobbie.
Number 1 plug is always wet, with fuel when it starts misssing, doesnt appear to be oiley. Definently smoking too, when it plays up. Unfortunately I'm in Kent, I'm kind of an ex-mechanic, but have limited gear nowdays, is there any way to test the actuators?

Hi,
Could do, not looked at how much work is need to swap them. I'm just getting orgnized at the moment, have some proper oil, a filter & multiair filter screen. I still have an 'orrible feeling that its going to be the actuator. Whatever happens, I'll definetely be stripping it for inspection. I'm not buying one of those bloody things unless its the last resort.

Hi,
I'm new to this. I belong on the Alfa forum! Will have to look it up.

In case this is of any help, to anyone, here is an update:
Low compression recorded on number 1 cyl. The only fault code recorded is P0301
I stripped out the multiair unit, & found the classic fault- number 1 cylinder valve, piston, cylinder thing, had completely unscrewed, obviously resulting in a loss of hydraulic pressure.
I did manage to screw it back in & secure with loctite, sure enough, some of the thread was damaged, it may last, but who knows?
The car is now running sweetly, very smooth & quiet, I'm guessing that cylinder had been working loose for some time.

Thanks for that info (guess I have to research that classic fault

How easy was it to get to that area ?

Side Question (hope you dont mind)
do all 1.4 multiair have the extra small screw in multiair oir filter?
Most articles on the web only mention it for the turbo models?
guess they must do as the multiair mech is v sensitive to oil condition
and so better check/replace mine

2011 Punto Evo 1.4 multiair (77kw/105PS)
60k miles
just bought

update - yes do have the screw in filter 'tube', but removal is blocked by a rib on the engine mounting, so as per uputube video's etc, looks like need to remove the engine mounting first !
