i helped a lady and her daughter change a tire once and they were very grateful and i enjoyed doing it

in the snow last time i drove past a crash which had recently happened so i stopped seeing as my house was just down the road and i'm trained in first aid to see if there was anything i could do one guy was still quite shaken up and just said thanks for stopping everyones okay, the other guy asked why i had stopped and what did i think i could do to help them

i turned round and said that im trained in first aid, i live in this village and my house is just down the road if we needed anything but coz of your attitude im just going to go home and have a nice hot cup of tea

and drove off in my punto with no problems look on his face was priceless

I stopped to check the two people involved in a light crash were alright and had called someone as I was going past and I knew the area well.

I stopped after witnessing a light crash, my passenger was saying "GO GO GO, you didn't see anything"

They left it as damage was minor

I wouldn't stop to help a broken down person unless in the middle of no where or if i had somewhere "safe" to stop.
I failed to help a women who had broken down, looked like oil pouring out from under the car, she had a wild dog in the back & a child - i was in a busy road with no where to stop... i was very temped to help[ push the car to the side our of the way of the entrance to a side road but as said - no where to stop and a crazy dog in the car

I stopped yesterday to help someone that had broken down, when I say broken down. I mean ran out of fuel about 200m from the pumps, So I parked up my car and started helping them push At least I can say I did my good thing for yesterday

In answer to the thread, I would help a broken down motorist, I have done twice before. They always seem grateful and never expect it from a teenager. If the circumstances were strange, say a woman by herself I would be dubious about helping her in case it's an ambush or chances of her going to the cops on 'rape charges'... God knows, but I hear it happening a lot.

as mentioned in previous thread, i used to own several 4x4's, always carried fire extinguishers, jump leads, and towropes/strops.

I always stop for motorists on side of road with hazzards etc. offer use of phone if needed. changed plenty of wheels. even taken an exhaust backbox of a knackered 3 series beemer in the pouring rain.

My way of thinking is if i'm on the side of the road, i expect someone to stop and offer assistance. so i do for them. i've gone out of my way to drive peeps carrying petrol cans back to there cars and waited to make sure it fires up again, towed crashed/broken down cars of a303, moved cars of carriageways to clear roads, and make broken down vehicle safer for other motorists and those broken down. its every motorist duty to make sure someone else is ok.

it helps having official 4x4 response id, as in this day and age people are reluctant to accept help in case you are a rapist/serial killer etc.

so always offer your driving licence as id, and even offer to let them call someone so they can give your details just in case. offering id and the call to a friend/loved one can put single females at ease.

be safe when helping others peeps, don't put yourseves in danger just to aid someone else. self preservation comes first.

and having read above post, call someone you know to inform them of situation, possibly mention to police a vehicle is broken down and you've stopped to aid them, but don't use 999 they don't like it. LOL

i've made sure my mrs has a handy bar to hand in her car just in case.

also you could buy a six cell maglite, makes a bloody handy truncheon, and weighs a bit with six d cell batteries and the weight of the torch.

a '' legal '' weapon.

hell yeah, like to see you also carry the spare mag beacon for the towee.

only carry a fire extinguisher, jump leads and beacon for my safety now.

if i stop, quad flash strobe to roof, one of the 4x4's had blues in the rear, only used when stationary at accident scenes until police arrive. was told this would be acceptable by an officer as orange/amber lights often ignored by motorist as '' council vehicles '' etc. they slow for the blues.

thankfully although have stopped at several accidents not needed to fire the blues up and just used the ambers and wig wag rear fogs.

but the 4x4's had the room for the kit and the dogs, not towing anyone in the cinqy or now the punto LOL. not killing my engine, will still help the stranded though. if anyone who reads this thread expects help then they should offer it where possible.

2x bad starter solenoids.... started with hammer on the solenoid or bump start.
1x bad starter solenoid connection... wiggled it about till it engaged.
1x autobox fault (citroen refusing so start because it thought it was in drive... recovery)
1x bad battery not holding enough charge... bump started
1x ECU Fault? Completely dead engine... AA came, and even he didnt have a clue.

i hope you removed the citroens drive shaft if rear wheel drive, otherwise towed no more than 2 miles. for those that arn't aware, you don't tow autos more than 2 miles at 30mph, as the gearbox's rely on the engine to circulate the oil. you will kill an auto by towing it. always trailer or driveshaft removal on a rear wheel drive. wouldn't have a clue what to do with the wifes, its front wheel drive and auto. probably tow it home and kill it LOL

just thought that could be useful, see you put 'recovery' on the auto.

i don't feel height has anything to do with it, i'm 6' 3'' and 13 stone, a smile, flash professional id/driving licence and offer assistance, but see where your're going wth the head and tatts lol

always offer id and suggest they call a friend/family member if you think they may be a bit worried. calm them down. offering this can be enough to put minds at rest.

lost count of the ££££££££££ i'v refused and had shoved in me hand for tyre changing etc.

we came back from collecting a shed off freecycle. it was in the twin horse box. there were about 10 breeze blocks left and blokey asked us to take them. i wanted them in the passat est, mrs wanted them in horse box. we argued and they ended up in the horse box. i didn't want this as this put a shed load of weight in the wrong zone. they'd of aided the car in the boot, but bowing to her wishes, they went in back of horse box. the very back.

a303, down hill about 50mph, slight right hand curve in road, trailer startd snaking, released throttle and it all went t*ts up. jack knife'd skidding down carriage way. trailer ended up in six foot ditch still connected to car, front bumper of car was facing all four lanes of 303, bumper literaly just shy of left lane white line. a mercedes 4x4 cherry picker lorry pulled onto 303 and straight into a lay by about 2 miles earlier. he pulled up, gave us a safe zone, he and his buddy jumped into the back of lorry, grabbed a pair of chainsaws, cut car and trailer free from any trees/bushes and then waited an hour for old bill. one rolling roadblock later and he pulled car and trailer straight out of ditch, handbrake had applied it self on horsebox, front left had gone flat on car. his truck didn't even notice we were attached. like a hot knife in butter. put us on verge, i had to throw a £20 into the cab as they refused to take it.

+a micheldever mobile tyre fitting van came past, stopped and pumped the wheel up for us. thats why i STOP to help motorists. what goes around comes around. without them god knows. and just to add mother in law and brother in law had already passed without stopping !!!!

Lol. Family hey. Who'd have them. I've upgraded and got a mag mount LED blaze bar for the roof now, it's absolutely fab (and at the price it cost should be). Regarding the wig wag rear fogs, think I might look into that, I know at my last stop with the fiesta and old lady the rear fogs went on with everything else to make the car stand out.

Regarding the towing of autos I know most are speeds only upto 15-20mph for a mile or two. I try to avoid towing them at any cost.

safest way is not to touch anything with an auto box, just if necessary get it to a safe spot and ditch it for recovery wagon. and them blaze units arn't cheap either.

I did stop and help a bloke a couple of weeks ago.

Brand new car, and he was headed to get petrol and unfortunately, didn't make it. Car cut out on a junction, halfway round the corner. A very busy corner at school kicking out time.

Pushed the guy round the corner (he was disabled and unable to push it) and just up onto the path (uphill too lol)

I would have offered to take him to the petrol station, but he wasn't particularly grateful and I was in a rush to get somewhere else.

I have passed vehicles stopped on the hard shoulder. No hazards, no warning triangles out, no indication they've broken down. If I see either of those, then yeah, I probably would stop.

Got to a roundabout to find someone pushing it around. Tailbacks in all directions. Doubled back and pulled up infront. Just as I got there a police van turned up.

I'll pull him off here if you can stop the traffic I said. 30 seconds later normallity was resumed. Towed him about 1/4 mile to a local garage. Think I had a good day that day.

well no 4x4 anymore, but came across the local police shogun directing traffic, as waved pass noticed a honda civic and dude on cruches. (turns out to be injured squaddie)

i turned round 1/4 mile up road, recognised the police community support womble with a real policewoman, asked if he wanted me to go home and get me strops and shackles. his face lit up and he said please.

when i returned i suggested just towing it to the car park 1/2 mile down road. He asked if i could take it to the garage back home (2 miles). this made me smile, i wish he'd said before. i had £3 worth of petrol in front of car in the can i'd already got for me mower and strimmer. no filler neck. nicked policemans bottled water, cut bottom off and used for funnel. happy squaddie paid me for the fuel and policeman free to do some real work!! job done.

was happy to tow the civic with me 1.1 punto if necessary, as it would have been all down hill

Stopped for a 2 car crash on the main dual carriageway into town. Checked for any injuries, luckily there was nothing worse than seatbelt rash and a hurt shoulder. Local policeman turned up shortly after, and then the traffic cops at about 130mph. Idiots. Nobody was in danger, nobody was seriously hurt - they were risking a major crash by driving like knob heads.

I was on the M4 in South Wales on my little MZ 250 2 stroke bike. Buzzing along nicely at 70 (flat was 85 - eventually). It did a couple of coughs near Port Talbot but hey its a stroker they do that.

Just near Swansea I heard this howling tyre screech though my helmet & ear plugs quick check of mirrors nothing going on ??? Bad move the back end went into a snake and the bars began to slap. My engine had seized solid but I could not get to the brakes or the clutch with all the slapping. I got it down to about 20mph when it finally spat me off.

Two Irish guys behind me in a Transit van pulled up & helped me to the hard shoulder then heaved the bike into the back & took me to my mate's house in Pontardulais (a bit farther down the M4). They were on the way to the ferry, refused all payment and were well impressed how I rode it out for so long.

If I see a biker in trouble I will always stop. I used to stop for car drivers but after a female gave hints that she thought I was some dodgy bloke after her "whatevers", I now drive on by. What a wonderful health & safety risk averse society we are.
