Parking last night, my 1.1 eco active engine would be at idle then start revving by itself, dropping back to idle, revving again etc and the EML come on. I disconnected the battery and had a look around as well as I could in the dark. I saw the airbox had lifted partly off of the throttle body as the bolt fixing had pulled completely out of the hole it's meant to sit in. I pushed everything back into place with a view to securing the airbox securely. I reconnected the battery and fired her up and the engine runs smoothly, but the EML is still on. Any idea what could cause this?

Make sure it can also clear the codes.

There cheap as chips for a handheld one.

For a little extra live data version are available

If you already have a laptop / windows tablet a USB ELM interface is more useful.

It all depends on budget and how much you are likely to do do yourself in the future and whether you already have a laptop

Ok, I got an OBD2 scanner. It comes up with fault P0505 which is to do with the Idle Air Control Valve. I took the throttle body off and gave the whole thing a good clean, but it didn't help. The engine still revvs whether the IAC lead is plugged in or not. Is there a way to remove the valve from the throttle body (bloody fiat not making it bolt on...) or do I have to stump up £80 odd quid for a new throttle body?

Best to give it a very thorough clean before spending on a new one, check back on some previous posts over the years to find the best cleaner to use.

does the code clear ? and come back

theres a few types of throttle bodies

on mine to clean you have to remove the T/B turn upside down and gently pull a plastic cover back to squirt the T/B or brake cleaner in

The code does clear then come back. I've slid the plastic cover back and sprayed cleaner inside it, a ton of gunk run out and I kept spraying until it run clear. Should the valve be stiff to move?

i don't think you can move it from memory. Its been quite a few years since i looked at mine which turned out to be the battery anyhow.

Have you thought it might be due to an air leak?

P0505 is the ECU complaining it can't maintain the specified idle, there are a few reasons for this, yes it could be the idle control valve that's failed or gummed up, but it's more than possible there's an air leak after the throttle body.

If the idle still bounces around, up and down with the idle control valve disconnected, something else is influencing it.

Sometimes the engine will idle smoothly, but after a couple of minutes the revs climb then bounce around. Other times the revs bounce around from the word go. I'll have to look into finding an air leak. It's giving me a headache!
