Hi all.
I'm in the process of renewing the rear brakes on my 2008 1.3 Multijet Panda because on one side the shoes disintegrated and were pretty much stuck on.

It has been, frankly, a nightmare so far.... But I have a question...

There are four studs on each rear hub that hold the stub axle plate onto the chassis. What thread are they??

I've had some difficulty with removal, and at least one of the nuts needs replacing. I'd assumed they are a standard M10, but the M10 nut I intended to use as a replacement does not fit.

Many thanks in advance.
Rich.

They are a metric fine thread, and are grade 10.9, nuts and studs. OE replacements are not expensive, so get them.

Standard metric bolts/nuts are usually grade 8.8. Suspension components are usually 10.9, stronger, for a reason, and use the fine thread partly to discourage incorrect replacements. So do not replace with 8.8 even if you can find them.

The stub axle studs are quite a bit longer than would appear necessary. The exposed threads rust. Rust jams the treads making them a nightmare to remove. You cannot get access to cut off the excess threads though you might be able to run a Metric Fine die nut down the threads.

Having done two cars, IMO, the best option is to arc weld the nuts to the studs. The heat shocks any seizure and allows the studs to unscrew from the stub axle. My cheap Aldi stick welder did the job fine. Unplug the battery before arc welding.

You "could" replace the studs with High Tensile bolts but Fiat will have used studs for a reason. Just get the OEM fit with blue threadlock and use thread covers with copper paste to keep them clean. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/STUDDING-END-PVC-PROTECTION-CAPS-M8-M10-M12-FOR-THREADED-METAL-ROD-BAR-STUD/362638033460?hash=item546ee94234:g:n6UAAOSw~Ndcyrpx
