Hi,

I have a 2006 Fiat Panda 1.1 Active, which does not come with a power outlet (n)

I have got all the things I need to put one in myself but I can't find ANY way through the bulkhead in to the car, I want the socket to go in the glove box

Has anyone got some advice on what I should do as I really need to plug in my sat nav, I do not want to go to a garage as they rip you off.

Cheers,

- Lee

I've been meaning to ask something like that for a while. I suspect the wiring is already present down by the handrake where the socket is on fancy Pandas. Can anyone confirm that?

Found some wiring down there myself but curiosly it only works when the lights are on! There are 2 sockets there, according to elearn cd one is for the cigar lighter and the other for electric mirrors. I was thinking of wiring one into the fuse box myself.

On a slightly related note if there is no way thru the bulk head does this mean installing an amp is out of the question on an active.

I would suspect the wiring is there, as Irish spec 1.1 Active's have a socket - but have no mirror controls. Would the wires that powered with the lights on be the ones for the light circle around the socket tarby?

I thought tha myself. There are 3 in total but only getting a reading on the multimeter using 2. The middle seems dead. Gonna take another look l8r on before work if i get time but the wiring is definitely there as it is specified as being such on the elearn CD (white connector is cigarette socket, black is mirrors). Fiat really seemed to have mucked up on not including a power outlet on the active given the interest on this and other forums. also i should warn i bew the fuses in 2 chargers while testing so prob best to stick an inline fuse as well!

I have noticed a 3-pin connector wire hanging down on the passenger’s side, left of the centre console, and wondered what this is and if I can use that to create a power outlet?

Havent go a clue what it could be tbh. However, i was wondering. Since i am not getting a voltage reading from the middle wire of the cigarette connector could it be possible that the fuse is missing in the fuse box? Would this be fused seperately on the panda? Also i agree witth the theory that i had previously connected it to the wire for the outer light as this wire was significantly thinner than the other 2 which I would assume are for carrying the higher current required for a power outlet. Have to go to work now but will have a poke around on thurs to see what i can find out

Had to sort one out a while ago- what a pain in the arse!

Yes the connector is there under the centre console for the cig lighter, but the 12v element supply wire isn't connected to anything in the fusebox. In fact, the fusebox has no terminal in it for the fuse or the relay to power the socket- so either get creative or you'll need the complete fusebox (and the entire vehicle loom as they're hard-wired) to do it. Also the original socket wiring is controlled by the Body Computer to only become 'live' once the engine is running.

TBH a Dealer could refuse to do the job anyway as technically it would be modifying the vehicle beyond it's original factory state without authority from Fiat. ;)

I managed it ok in the end, the difficulty is in choosing a suitable wire to bridge into that can easily handle the load, and in making the finished product look neat and almost 'factory' (I'm fussy about that!).

thanks

This would explain why i am having problems then. Gonna see if i can power it from the ignition only wire on the stereo loom as I have the stereo connected to the other one (always powered).

OK, SUCCESS!!!!! :slayer:

Ran a cable from the ignition power supply wire from the stereo (the red one on my harness - it a sony) down the back of the centre console, under the carpet (this was the tricky bit - ended up taking off the central plastic moulding around the gear lever to the central console and using cable ties to feed the cable thru under the thick insulation under the carpet ) then up through the gap in the odments tray and into a 2 way socket my dad got me. This is velcroed in. I put a 5 amp fuse inline so as not to overload anything as i managed to blow one of the fused in the fuse box whilst wiring  . Works a treat so long as ignition is on (which is the way i wanted it anyway). If anyone wants I can take pics.:)

Just bear in mind that radio feed wire will only be intended to carry a small current, and is probably fed from a small (low amp) fuse. The power socket or cigarette lighter is usually wired to a separate 15 or 20 amp fuse and designed to take large currents. Your arrangement is OK if only powering say a sat nav, but remember not to try plugging in a tyre inflator or other high-current devices as the circuit won't cope.

Good point but i will only ever be charging my phone or occassionally running a sat nav from it. BP have got a perfectly good tyre inflator for my needs lol :)

If I need to charge either my Stanav or my phone I remove the ciagrette Lighter and plug the charger in there, much much easier and less time consuming.

The point of this exercise is that British spec 1.1 Actives do not have a cigarette lighter to begin with...

I think by default, Actives have nothing and all the other models have a 12 socket (looks like lighter but without the bit that gets hot!). The lighter was an option as part of the 'smokers pack', which also adds the natty little lidded box (as an ashtray) that fits in the cupholders. (and £39 more)
Pete

Aaaaah I see, well the previous owner or my car was obviously a smoker as it's got a cigarette Lighter and ashtray neither of which are any good to me, but where the Ashtray sits in the front makes brilliant Cupholders for when I'm having my KFC on the move.

If anyone want's the lgihter and ashtray just pm me, I don't want or need it.
