We have a 2018 Cross with a set of fancy alloy wheels on it. We recently had a blow-out on one of the tyres and then had to drive on a dirt road with the small space saver for quite a while - which took ages and we were worried about a puncture on the space saver too.

We'd like to get a full size spare wheel to keep in the boot for long journeys - the local dealer has only offered to sell us a matching alloy which is very expensive. I was wondering if we can get a steel wheel to match the alloy? Even better if I could just get a cheap steel wheel from another Panda at the breakers yard and keep that as a spare? But will it fit a Cross?

It's on a 185/65 R15 tyre.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

This subject is very comprehensively covered in a number of previous posts - try the ‘search this forum’ tool from the Panda 2012 home page..

The summary is that a full size spare for the 4x4 and Cross models (with 15” wheels) will not fit in the wheel well in the boot. The wheels on other Pandas are only 14” but the 15” wheels from some early Punto models will fit the car (but still not the boot) Note: the wheel nut spacing changed in later Puntos so the newer wheels don’t fit the Panda.

Thanks very much Herts - I did a search and as you say, it seemed to be more about whether or not it will fit in the boot vs the actual specific size. We don't get the Punto model here in South Africa so I guess we'll have to get a proper alloy. :)

My waze 4x4 comes with steel wheels and tyre size 185/65r15, so there should be suitable steel wheels out there.

The punto in question :

176 model 1993/99
188 model 1999/2005

ALL your Palio in ZA will have the same 4 x 98 stud pattern you require ;)

2005 on cars were shared platforms with GM and used their 4 x 100 :(

I was going to say this too: the Waze and City Cross models both have 15” steel wheels hidden by plastic wheel covers. And in mainland Europe the Panda Wild (a lower-spec 4x4 model) has the same steel wheels with natty centre caps with the 4x4 logo.

Note that to use 185 section tyres, as well as being 15”, the wheels on the Cross have a different offset (ET32) compared to the non-Cross 4x4 (which uses 175 width and ET35). A small difference, but enough to stop the tyres fouling the suspension arm at full lock.

However, since the OP is in South Africa, these models may not be available there.

Thanks for all the great advice and info, much appreciated - this is a great forum. The 500 has been quite popular here in South Africa so I think I'll hunt around some salvage places and see what I can find. We also see quite a few Grande Punto (Indian made) here, so will do some research and feedback once I'm sorted. Thanks again.
