General Mild Hybrid Firefly is finally coming

Ive noticed that all the small and very low emission engines have to be driven in a special way per engine type, most normal drivers don't give two hoots as to how they drive and it is in their mind only the car that can produce economical/low emission numbers and hence they often blame the car,

99% of the population just want to get in the car and drive it how they where taught to drive, they don't expect every new car that comes along will need new training on how to get the best out of it.

These are a mass produced car for the general public, they quote figures of economy claiming low emissions (high MPG) do the general public not have a right to expect their car will achieve near to the claimed figures without having to relearn how to drive??

The Prius V M5 analogy is just silly as the M5 was designed to be raced and was barely breaking a sweat, where as the prius was being ragged around at its limit.
Which gets better fuel economy a diesel locomotive pulling 1000 tons of freight train or a fiat panda, doing the same.....

think how diverse the description is "general public" who have been taught to drive by differing instructors over upto 50 plus years period when conditions have been wildly different.

I agree and my hope is that the hybrid vehicles should be giving not only better overall results but much more standardised for all users.

our choice of vehicle and powerplant should suit our journey type and pocket.

most owners can reasonably expect either a plus or minus % of the modern testing system based on their own journeys compared to the standardised test journey type and local climatic conditions. we have to understand the drag caused by water on the roads and electrical drain of all the onboard systems in or out of use can and will make a difference.

Any partnership takes working on both sides to get it to work.

According to Autocar the Fiat 1.0 Hybrid produces 69 bhp, and 69 lb-ft of torque. That's 94Nm. Same power but less torque than the trusty 1.2 (102Nm).

94Nm was what my old 1.0 Mk1 Aygo put out. It was no fireball :D And that weighed in at 825Kg - a good deal less than the Panda which carries 25% more at 1055 Kg.

It's hardly going to be quick!

Fiat claims it will be more fuel efficient than the 1.2, but I've not seen any stats of by how much.

Suzuki's 1.2 Mild Hybrid in the Ignis (870kg) gains about 7% over their standard 1.2 in both test consumption, and C02 emissions. So I guess that expectations of fuel savings should be of that order for the Panda. To be weighed against, the extra cost buying the mild-hybrid, and that it's something else to wear out - Li-ion batteries don't last for ever.

I guess every little saving helps.

The panda was supposed to be a cheap small car with everything you need and nothing you don't. That's the reason why i love my 169. Appart from a pair of brake pads, 1 set of tires and the cambelt\water pump replaced, never needed anything more on 120000km. Goes everywhere and returns excellent fuel economy. It is everything i ever wanted from a city \ daily car. The new panda will be more complex, a lot more expensive and competing in price with a basic fiat tipo...!!!!That is a terrible decision by fiat and i bet they will loose a lot on sales. They don't even tried to give it a more powerful engine to justify the price!

You should grab a current gen Panda when the time comes. It’s essentially a 169 a little grown up with a tad bigger body (and a tonne of style). Very similar or identical to the 169 underneath. All welcome, nice small improvements across the board to drive.

All cars are getting very complex sadly. Though most consumers will buy em and throw money at em without notice!

I need a bigger car now so i am looking for a tipo 1.4 95hp (fire engine). Appart from some electronic stuff, the engine is still a normal aspirated with very good reliability and we will never have engines like this anymore. I can't justify trading the old for the new. My 169 is in perfect shape, just like new and i wouldn't gain a lot with the new one. I will keep the "old" panda for my wife (her daily drive) and add the tipo for the bigger trips with the kid. I just have to let the punto go but the little bastard refuses to die :). Having 2 cars and 2 motorbikes is already expensive. Adding a 3rd car would be just silly.

In that case, long live your 169!
